Norwegian 617

From a thread over on Expedition portal:

" A friend of mine is running a OM617A in his G-wagon. The only thing he has done to his engine, besides a total rebuild and an intercooler, is to give the engine some more diesel. This is done by replacing the pistons in the diesel pump, with some slightly oversize ones. Of course, the pump is then timed and adjusted by qualified mechanics. He is taking out a wopping 280 hp!! And this is with the original turbo. It is the next item to be swapped out, for a bigger one, but this is because the origintal turbo takes a beating, when you charge it with about 2 bars.
It is possible to take out about 335 hp from the OM617A by this method, but the original automatic gearbox can`t handle more than about 280. The manual gearbox can take even less.

Check out these videos. He runs 39 inch tires, and axelerates from 40 to 90 km/h in about 7-8 sekonds. And in the sekond video, you can see that he does not have a problem with turbo lag

If i can raise the cash, this is to be done to my G as well. "

Without more details it is hard to believe.
The videos don't show much and 280 hp with stock turbo sounds more than strange.
Where is the original post?

My guess he is confused and talking about different elements on the IP - M pump possibly. Horsepower sounds very hard to believe.

Kerry's original post is still there.

If you meant the one by LMN+, he couldn't resist tweaking Brian's nose so once more, his latest alias got detected and squashed... :laugh4:

The enthusiast in me jumps at the thought of all that horsepower available with ease but the skeptic in me thinks otherwise. How about temperatures in a cast iron head engines, reliability, EGT, what methods are being used to offset or counter these factors as I am sure no HP comes at free of cost. The figure of 280bhp is quite huge considering what the original engine makes. I have a Euro 300 turbo diesel as well as the Gurkha with OM616 turbo, the temptation of gaining all that bhp truly fascinates me to no end. When I had a chat with MB engineers here who were fitting the Gurkha with the OM616 turbo, they told me that 130bhp was available from this engine with ease but factors like long term longevity, economy etc. made them dial it back to a conservative 91bhp. Here I would side with the MB engineers, it maybe low powered, slow and boringly conservative, but it sure is reliable.

Yeah, like someone said in the diesel forum the other day....
"Powerful, reliable, inexpensive...pick any two..." ;)

No, no, it's pick any ONE of the three... :D

G-wagons never had a 617-95X so the original engine was not a turbo charged engine. 280 HP out of a 617-95X with a myna pump and a intercooler is certainly with the normal ranges what can be expected with a myna pump. Change the turbo and add a large intecooler and you can get up to 500HP with stock internals.
