German Diesel Motorcycle

Over on biodiesel.infopop.cc there is a link to www.centaurus.de regarding a newly introduced German motorcycle with a two cylinder diesel motor. It is a full size cycle, not a heavy moped like some of those British army Enfield cycles (still in production in India), but seems geared for acceleration rather than top end (c. 125 kph) and gets 94 MPG!

Of course, as a classics professor, I should now bore you with a lecture on the differences between the good Centaur of Greek myth (Chiron, the Greek equivalent of Yoda, aka the original Child Care Centaur) versus the bad centaurs, but I won't. You can just refer to the recent book, _The Centaur's Smile_, on the various mythic monsters of the eastern Mediterranean.

Fimum Fit,

Thanks for the link. Did you check out the sound clip of the machine running? Jim

Diesel Mortorcycle

Ohmygawd!

Hehe, I'll bet they didn't even have to work hard to make that bike "retro'. That thing looks SOOOOO East German; that outfit probably just cranked up the production line at some old factory that was behind the iron curtain. It's pretty cool; I wonder if it's an IDI engine? WVO to go anyone?

Still, it's too bad it doesn't have some decent brakes and suspension.

Fimum,
Louis Chiron was a nearly mythical Mercedes racing driver in the 1930's...

Someone translate, how much, and will they be selling in the US?
I love the look of it..

Better than putting a VW diesel on an old Harley..

It's a nice looking bike. I would consider it if it came here but I listened to the sound. My lawnmower sounds better.

I can't play the sound, but I do like the looks.

Some segments of their website, as far as I read it, brag about the retro look and claim that it is the "Harley" of diesel motorcycles -- meaning, apparently, that it's good for long distance cruising. It surely would be better for that than my '73 JAWA (Czech 2 cycle) 350 Californian, which leaks too much oil to ride anytime except when I'm wearing my really greasey under car work coveralls.

Louis Chiron's biography I know well, but I still worry that the name may make some customers think of Nessus and the other bad centaurs, a really archetypal Hell's Angels group if there ever was one.

They also say something about ties with British Royal Enfield, but I skimmed the German in those parts rather hastily.

P.S. I just looked at the Google translation and it is one of the worst I've seen.

Centaurus Diesel 851
Gotta get one of those.
The sound is all in the exhaust; which can be tuned = changed very easy.

If you really want 1931 motorcycle technology, why not just buy our American made yuppie-cycle for $20K plus and rip the mufflers off like most Harley owners?

I think the 2yr ago thread may have been about the Kawasaki (I think thats who makes it) diesel military Enduro bike that is/was being tested. 2 years ago is about when the info about that came out so it fits your time lines.

I can understand how Google translations would make any classical language professor cringe with pain.
