Pulling the Engine from a 300SD
My 300SD threw a rod and I am going to replace the motor with a used one. It appears, from the literature, that the trans must be pulled with the engine, is this true? Are there any other details I should know before taking on this job? Any special tools required?
Thanks Richard |

im not sure on how hard it would be but i would make sure to replace any gaskets and seals that might leak on your donor engine

By all means pull the tranny/engine as a unit. I have done it both ways and pulling them together is alot easier than separating them. Replace the front/rear crank seals and the oil filter housing and IP pump gaskets prior to installing the new engine. May as well replace both front/rear tranny seals too.

you can do it without removing the tranny, but, if you remove both the engine and tranny, it would be a great time to do what the other gentleman said as far as replacing gaskets, rubber boots/ flex discs, tranny shifter bushings, etc. you will find that those two upper bolts are a lot easier to remove with the tranny out of the car. the tranny is pretty small on these - nothing like on an old chevy or something like that.

Another thought is if you do not have a big impact wrench go ahead and break the front crank bolt loose prior to pulling the engine out.

It will go well for you if you pull both. Remember to cut a piece of plywood to fit over the AC condensor, it fits in there nicely once you pull the radiator. Keeps accidental damage to a minimum.
Best to drain the trans first. Less weight that way. Not a bad time to replace the trans filter and put in fresh trans fluid. |

Very good suggestions, replacing those seals. Thanks all for the advice.
Richard PS. What do I ask for when ordering the injection pump gaskets? |

Injection pump to block gasket.
