617 Engine Oil Filter O-rings
I started to change the 2 small O-rings on the end of the oil filter cover shaft today. I had some replacement O-rings but they were all the same size because only one size is listed in Fastlane.
It looks like the shaft should have 2 different size 0-rings because the 2 diameters where the O-rings mount are different sizes. Is it correct to use the 2 same size O-rings? BTW:617 engine, '80 300SD, 250,000 miles. P E H PS: It was definitely time to change the old O-rings as they came out in little chunks. |

I wondered the same thing, but simply changed them using the same sizes as it seemed to stretch a small bit not to interfere with its sealing ability. I have not seen anyone else question this size difference and assume everyone else used the same ones despite the small difference in the diameter of the shaft. Leave it to you to notice! I read a thread a while back saying they looked different but were really the same. It may have been an old post I found on a search, though. I was worried I had the wrong o-rings at first too.

I purchased these at the dealer a while ago and they were identical. They may look different but according to my parts guy they are the same and interchangable.

same size on 603 also
Folks,
As an FYI, on my 603 engine the 2 o-rings also look different but are the same size according to the dealer. Mine came out in chunks, very hard and brittle. They had been in there at least 50+K in my ownership and an unknown time before that. Any suggestions on change intervals? Just inspect at O/C time? Chuck |

Change them more often than once every 20 years!

For the 606 they come in the box with the oil filter so you change them every time. I don't know why they can't do that with the other ones.

I have the 606 engine and my (either original, or after-market) Mercedes oil filters never come with the O rings. The only things included in the filter box apart from the oil filter itself, are two METAL washers (for the oil drain plug) and a large replacement rubber ring for the oil filter cap. I have always found that the two small rubber O rings referred to in this thread need to be purchased separately. Phil

Ok, apparently my statement was too general. I just looked up the 95 and 99 on Fastlane and the filters are different. The 99 oil filter stem only requires one of those small rings, and it does come with the filter.
But I still stand by my rant. They should include those things with the filter just like they include the washers and the large ring.

I fully agree with you. Those "O" rings should be included in the box with every oil filter. They should not be sold as a separate item. Phil

I just did mine, on my 603. There the same, the one closer to the top just looks bigger because it has been streched for 15+ years. Mine were original as far as I know and were in ok shape. Changing them every oil change is probably overkill. I would say every 5 years sounds about right.

just changed my o-rings today as well. the old ones disintegrated on removal. they were probably the originals
![]() also found that the stem was clogged. cleaned it out with some wire and it cleared.
