I love my W116 300SD.
-Light Ivory -MBTex interior(think it's Bamboo) -A/C works and I think the servo does but I live in LA so I don't need heat much. -Chrome bundt wheels -running B99 from Conserv Fuel in Brentwood, CA. |

I have a brown 1979 300SD that I got for free on craigslist. It was really rough and was missing the front bumper, headlights, grille, alternator, belts, battery, air cleaner, seats were shot, some of the wiring harness was cut, etc. But now it is my daily driver running B99 biodiesel all year. It's also almost rust-free (just a little surface rust in the trunk).
I think it turns sharper than any other car out there, even a Ford Bronco II! I removed the AC belt and am getting in the high 30s mpg. I drive it on the freeway to work everyday and drive it everywhere else--and I only have to fill the tank once a month (though I actually fill up every two weeks because I have a "never let it get below half a tank" rule)! I have no idea why people are only getting mpg in the 20s. That is really low. My big 3/4 ton 1965 International Travelall was getting about 20 mpg and it had a gasoline-powered V8!

Squiggle Dog, you may want to do a check of your odometer and verify it's accuracy. The 300SD will typically get mid to upper 20's mpg and maybe, maybe sniff 30 mpg if driven 45 - 50 mph on the highway with a tailwind
This is a 2 ton car that rides like a dream so 26 - 28 mpg is nothing to scoff at.

I'm in the middle of Repainting my 1979 300SD....had some surface rust and wanted to get to it before it got any worse. Its all in Epoxy primer right now....as soon as I finish the front fenders everything is getting resprayed in Polyurethane.

w116 daily driver
i have a 1980 300SD that's been my daily driver in upstate NY for about two years.. I've learned the importance of carrying three extension cords in the winter so I can plug into the nearest power outlet to keep the block heater warm.. the car's been generally reliable - my only complaint is the 'little' things - the ACC, pwr windows work sporadically, at best... leaky windscreen..
she's still a good car, nonetheless.. after spending this entire past weekend mucking around installing a new exhaust system - i'm ready to buy something from, oh - dunno - This Decade! At the end of the day, there's not many new cars that match the build quality of this 33 yr old benz.. think i'm gonna install my euro headlamps this weekend, so - I guess i really don't plan on selling it! i'll send photos (once i've cleaned her up!). -fredman near albany, new york 1980 mbz 300 sd [w116] ~~ former addictions: 1966 mbz 250se couple (euro) [w111] 1988 mbz 300e [w126, i think?] 1970 jaguar e-type OTS 1966 lincoln continental convertible 1980 toyota landcruiser FJ-60 1991 alfa romeo 164L quadrofoglio 1993 acura nsx |
