Also note that if you have a pool of water in the front or even rear foot wells, it could be the front windshield seal leaking. The rust you mention at the rear pillar makes me wonder if your car has a sunroof with a plugged rear drain hose.
No sunroof. Trunk gets quite wet.

In that case you need to check trunk seal, taillight seals, and rear window seal for leaks.

Woodrat, call the M-B Classic Center and see what they can tell you. If anyone can get the gasket you need it is them.

I did do a quick search before posting the link to the seal at Pelican.
The internet states that w123 chassis goes from 11-1975 to 01-1986. This led me to believe that the OP's 1976 240D was in fact a W123. If that is the case, then the seal linked is what he/she/they are looking for and will work.

If the OP's 240D belongs to some other chassis group, then I suppose it will not. My bad.

I too was mildly confused by the term "windshield" as used to describe a rear window seal. I solved this by contacting Pelican directly and clarifying that the seal was in fact for the rear window. As previously stated, I have since purchased the seal and it has been installed.

I second that. I'll also add that water can get in via the front/upper corners of the trunk opening in the body. There's a joint between panels there, and sometimes the sealer fails.

My 240D is a W115 body, not the W123.

Thanks for clarifying you have a W115.

The correct MB part number is 1156780820.

The MSRP for the factory part is $167.
It is available at Peach Parts, as well as any physical or online MB dealership parts department.
I like MB oem parts dot com.

Factory parts are usually the best choice for longevity, especially rubber parts.
