Sorry to say I haven't done anything today. My diesels and I are separated until I can get back up to Eugene. At least my brother is looking after them, and, weather permitting, working on the dashboard transplant. Further updates as events warrant!

It's the daily/station car. Need a weekend to change the front rotors.

Today I replaced the o ring for the oil level sensor on my 90 300d. I am waiting on a flywheel lock so I can replace the front crank seal.

I keep my car in nice shape and sure, as they get older they need more attention.

My mechanic told me to get a Lexus. He said he's told people that before and it was the last time he ever heard from them because they don't need any repairs. Now THAT'S the mark of a great car.

That all said, most of the Lexus's not needing repair are only 15 years old and newer, so we'll see how they fare when they get to be 30 and 40 years old. My car is a 1991 300d. I was in a friend's 1991 Lexus 400 one time and I was curious to see how the car was, being that it was the same year and heft (not the intro level, but a nicer Lexus). The car was crap! (or said another way, he never fixed anything). The car didn't ride well, his entire instrument cluster wasn't working (it's all electronic) so he couldn't see oil pressure or warning lights if they came on and he had no speedometer. No joke, we ended up getting pulled over by the police for speeding, he was doing 45 or 50 in a 35 zone but didn't know it.

You guys do what you want. If you enjoy fiddling with cars, have at it. For me, I want a car that works and gets me to where I need to go. I do routine maintenance to keep the car happy (today I'll be changing the big fuel filter) and I add fuel additive to keep the injectors lubed up so there ARE no problems. When something does start to break, I have it fixed right away unlike other people who think the problem will just magically get better and go away. I would rather fix things while they're a small (and less expensive) problem than letting it grow into a big problem.

Bottom line, if your car needs stuff fixed, then get them ALL fixed once and for all, and then ....you're done! All you have to do after that is drive it. A year later when a new problem comes up, get it fixed right away and....you're done!

I'm pretty sure this is a picture on my old gold sedan... 1981 Mercedes 300D? of all the beautiful w123's here you choose this old **** box lol.

What did I do on my w123 today... I washed old transmission so I could start to pack it up as a core for the rebuilt I'm getting.

Nope. The gold 80 sedan was 5 or 6 w123's ago. this is my 85 wagon I'm rebuilding.

in preparation to sand the body to ready it for 2K highbuild primer.


I sanded out a couple nicks from gravel and road trash to get to the tiny rust spots which accumulated over the years. I primed them with a cheap rattle can just to hold the rust off until I get all of them located and prepared for a 2K epoxy primer.

I replaced all 6 fuel return hoses, changed my oil, set the auto trans fluid level, and replaced the 134 with genuine R12…

I removed the CC actuator and amplifier and mailed them back for warranty work .

I'm also finally beginning to fool with my leaky manual HVAC .

It’s a panel of painting by numbers , I like to get my hands dirty , nothing uncommon of me trying something different if it’s of interest to me . So , rattle can spray painted my car , it’s tricky but doable , you start at the top , then work your way down , a panel at a time . Traditional methods are have a big spray booth , thousands of dollars of equipment and more into experience of mixing and spray techniques . This method is $50 in paint $ 150 in good quality spray can clear and patients .All in with taping off material and odds and ends another $60 added .Idea came from YouTube , paint society , if you care to explore . Results on side panels , like fenders , doors were perfect , it’s hoods and flats that require paint pressure that a can can’t provide , so it’s working in quadrants and watching your wet line , just keeping it fun and interesting and not getting made is things don’t go perfect , just let cure and lightly sand and work the surface . It takes weeks for this to take shape but it can be done anywhere , as long as you can shut a door and let it dry in place . I use a storage facility , and keep it low key , work at it for 2 hours and the earlier the better , reasoning behind this is the temperature , you can spray at 75 to 85 , but much over that it becomes a curing issue , can paint likes to take its time , the clear is a different issue , hardens in 4 hours , it’s professional paint and has changed the game when it comes to painting this way .
