Front W123 shock replacement and rear subframe mounts
I need to replace my front shocks pretty soon, the front left pops on turns. Anyone have any instructions, pictures would help too.
I also need to replace my rear subframe mounts. Could ya'll help me out on how to do that? Thanks |

If you don't want to use the fast navigation to gobbledygook, the TLDR is that the front shocks are as easy as removing the old and putting new ones in. The hardest part is getting to one of the lower bolts on each side that happens to be where the shock itself leans over it.
You don't need to remove the spring, but if you want to get a good look at everything, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzVaefYfh8A And as far as the rear, these videos have some good ideas and shots of the procedure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgrJvsS4KDM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHVpUESL3ds Many different ways to go about it, from all-in to leaving as much in place as you can. |
As someone who's just done this, I'd highly recommend Bilstein HD shocks and the Mercedes Benz supplied rubber mounts. Make sure the struts have covers (Mercedes sells them for the rear incase they're not supplied by Bilstein like in the front)
I took off a pair of aftermarket mounts that were 3 years old and they had cracked/ perished. |
Here’s the DIY I made on front shocks:

I just did the subframe bushings on my 300cd, and documented the process and self-made tool here: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/405340-squeaky-subframe-bushing.html |

I agree on the bilstein shocks. It is highly recommended to do the rear shocks while lifting the rear and messing with the subframe on the rear. |
