Springs behind brushes in starter - 1985 300CD-T
I'd like to rebuild the starter on my 1985 300CD-T (California). It is original with approximately 215,000 miles on it. I've gotten my money's worth.
There are some great write-ups here on the rebuild procedure. I've already done a de-install and re-install of a starter on a 1984 300CD-T (California)...I know the unpleasantness of it. My one little challenge concerning the rebuild: All of the rebuild parts... > Brush set > Bushing [near electrical connections] > Repair kit (armature mounting) > Intermediate bearing > Bushings (2) [near pinion] > Drive end bearing... are available from M-B *EXCEPT* the 4 springs (000-151-14-93) that sit behind the 4 brushes. What the heck?! It seems completely foolish to do a rebuild and leave the 33 year old springs (the car is 33 years old in two days) in place. So...any ideas about where to acquire the correct springs? Are they (likely) Bosch product? Any way to get the specifications on the springs so that I might acquire them from a starter parts supply source? Other suggestions? The parts schematic is attached for reference. I appreciate any help with this - 33 years is still young!! ![]() Thanks- |

I wouldn't worry too much about those springs. They are old, but as long as they aren't corroded, test and reuse. They aren't applying a whole lot of pressure to the brush.
