Sorry you had this trouble especially on the road.
First rule in my book is if you are having a problem that makes the battery die have it checked to be sure its charging before installing a new battery.

Well, OIlslick, there is a good example where listing your location as ' here and there' instead of an actual location missed being helpful when you needed it most...
Same goes for unexpected parts cars and things people might run across and give one a heads up on ....

It is one of those things which warms my heart.... since I hate electricity due to it being invisible.... the idea that once running we are strictly mechanical is like having a built in survivalist in the glove compartment.... a genie who can get you home to your own tools.... or the local trusted mechanic... or just to a warm bed until you are forced to deal with whatever else needs to be done ... SCORE !!!!

+1, have done the survivalist thing a few times. But what about the newer, electronically controlled diesels? Are they immune too? I think not, but would like confirmation. Thanks BTW I have a spare Hella voltage regulator for my OM601 and I am told Hella is also OEM. True? False?

I think not as well; if memory serves my 2007 R320CDI V6 had at least one electric fuel pump, and three batteries

When Uberwasser, Iridium, and I took our cars up to Phoenix to go junk yard hopping together, Iridium's car had the voltage regulator fail stranding him at one of the yards we stopped at. It was running fine, he shut it down, then he had no life signs. We took the battery out and brought it to Autozone to be charged and tested. It was fine, so he put it back in his car, started it up, and we headed back for Tucson.
His regulator must have failed on the trip up, and the power draw from his radio, blower motor, and other electric gadgets drained the battery on the way up. Once he shut it off, we were stuck. After charging, it was good to go until he shut it off again. ![]()

My 00 Dodge Ram with Cummins will crap out when the battery dies. The injection pump runs off the computer. Computer needs tricity. 12 Valve is akin to our 617 = all mechanical, reliable and beautiful.

140/210 - IDI engine with electronic controls. Electric fuel solenoid and computer sits between your foot and the rack, so you would be stranded on loss of power even though the engine itself would still run if you could feed it fuel. 211/164/251 and newer - CDI injection commanded by a computer, forget about anything working with no power.

You can also pull-start the car if you can get it to ~35mph, check your manual.

One of my favorite daily drivers is an old British car , the LUCAS stuff on it is mostly 50 + years old and works fine , like our beloved older Mercedes , it's all dead simple and can usually be repaired easily .
99 % of all LUCAS failures can be directly traced to ZERO quality control when the part was made way back when . I even still run a 19 Ampere generator on this rig , no hassles , just new brushes every 50,000 +/- miles .
