Grams/mile. The 220D and the Cheatswagon were in the 1-2 gram/mile region.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but if you were to retrofit EGR to a 220D, then it probably would.

I wonder which car would get better mileage.

I feel like mileage would be similar but peak power from the cheetle would be much higher.

My brother's W116 300SD did not smoke at all when he first got it and it has no emissions equipment besides the turbo. It needs a valve adjustment now but still doesn't smoke much. These cars should not blow large amounts of smoke if they are kept up properly

No they should not. Unfortunately people re-engineer the IP control devices and end up with smoke. Neither of my 190s smoke.

Thumbs up THANX !

For all the comments....

I'm out on a Road Rally in the Coupe right now , apart from the egr I do try to keep it bone stock as five decades of practical experience teaches that stock lasts longer , runs better and is more economical in the long run .

I have rebuilt the engine , re sleeving it as the DPO's ran it on unfiltered canola oil and anything else they got cheaply .

I rebuilt the turbo recently as it was passing a fair bit of oil into the intake stream and wasn't fee to spin , had radial and axial play , a loose circlip in one of the bushings blah blah blah , I replaced the shaft and so on , this reduced the blue smoke entirely .

Replaced all five injectors with good ones I tested on a buddy's pop tester .

I'm far from home having fun but discovered early yesterday morning that it will no longer exceed 85 MPH unless going down hill and when first I bought this car with it's bad engine (scored cylinders from coked up veggie oil) , it blew tremendous clouds everywhere it went but ran all the time @ 185 in traffic and easily went to 125 MPH with throttle left before I chickened out so I'm sure there's some little thing I've missed , why I want to learn IP timing very soon .

My other two M-B Diesel's the Wagon doesn't smoke , period .

The 240D smokes @ idle in gear but by the time I'm across the intersection from a dead stop , no more smoke so I know they're not supposed to smoke , I wonder why/how some folks don't get this simple concept .

Oh. Sorry to hear about the 85mph. If the turbo isn't leaking pressure somewhere then it has to be either a fuel or a compression issue. No doubt it has newish fuel filters, but change them again anyway. Might be the tank strainer or lift pump. Check for leaking fuel obviously. That car looks like it has nice paint. Wow - rebuilt motor? Maybe the pressure line to the Alda came off and you are getting no extra fuel with boost? Does it accelerate ok?

The last thing would be if the unfiltered canola oil fried the injection pump itself. You can have it rebuilt and tuned to give 20% more power if that appeals.

That's cruel and hilariously accurate...

Really having fun with the cheating VW quips, aren't we.

I'm always listening for fellow diesels, but most of the VW owners at work haven't really heard or paid any attention... probably going to have to once the DMV starts denying their registration...

That already happened to me. The first software update caught all the Touaregs. We had a 2010. Dealer was supposed to update, technical difficulties, then when it was updated they failed to give us the proper certificate. We got several tickets for out of date plates over it.

Nate, I'd start by changing your filters. Reduced top speed us usually a fuel issue, and the secondary filter is usually the culprit.

Thumbs up Home Again

This thing has had so many new filters I oughta buy them by the case.... .

" The last thing would be if the unfiltered canola oil fried the injection pump itself."

This is what I'm thinking and why I grabbed the one off the '85 SDL......

RE : engine rebuild : your shoulda seen the longitudinal 050" groove in the # 5 cylinder wall ~ that's why I had to re sleeve the block ~ it was waaaayyy past boring it out plus i don't like bored out cylinders because they always run too hot .

Anyways , it ran well all weekend long , a bit over 300 hard and fast (sort of) miles both days .

Saturday evening I arrived at the motel before anyone else so i fiddled with the vertical rod on the IP , I thought maybe it wasn't reaching full throttle .

I was bushed and fell asleep right after dinner , in the morning it was -worse- so I stopped in Pearsonville and adjusted it back the other way and got much more power out of it , was able to maintain 50 MPH on lots of the twisty mountain roads up through Kennedy and Troy meadows , all the way to Kernville , going down NH 20s50 I chased a buddy in his new Fiat Abarth , that was fun until too many switch backs with sand / gravel in the apexes , this car simply weighs too much to go stupidly fast near switchbacks with no guardrails and 1,000' + drop offs but I had lots of fun and he was amazed at how well it scooted , going down hills at least .

Hopefully this week i'll get a moment to make up a drip tube and try ther IP timing thing , I have other works to do first so we'll see . I can't down a running vehicle until others are 100 % and the window lift in the 240D failed .

Blah blah blah .

I wish someione else here had joined us , this is always a fun event .

The Carrera California is next month , more Desert back road run heading South this time .

Post Waiting For The Van To Come

O.K. then ~

Day one was mostly flat Desert and I got 27.2 MPG's , day two was mostly very steep hills and I got 22.6 MPG's , once I hit the Freeway in Kernville I was running late so I screwed it up to 85 ~ 90 + the whole way back to Los Angeles , anything over 60 MPG and the fuel economy tanks due to aerodynamics .

About the Light Ivory paint ~ it's original and i try to keep in polished but closer than 30' and the car begins to show it's terribly hard life .

The stupid Sta. Monica hippies who killed it , kept it filthy and full of munge , I still haven't properly cleaned the carpets on the sills .

The druggies across the street have sideswiped it and back into thrice ~ the last time I had to re replace not only the grille (! again !) but the AC condenser and have my custom built all metal over size radiator re cored.... .

Plus there's a patch of rust at the lower right corner of the back light that actually has a hole in the metal ~ as soon as I can get this smoking issue fixed , I'll re paint the entire exterior , a major tear down , glass out etc. re spray .

There's little point in applying new paint is there's always Diesel smoot on the cove ~ that will kill the new paint before it has a chance to properly cure .

You could throw on one of these till the paint cures, LOL.
