If you aren't flooring it occasionally, your vehicle is grossly over-powered, which is wasteful, but typical in the U.S. Long ago I was in Indonesia when they were advertising the new Super Kijang minivan with the new powerful 1.0 L engine. You should see the loads they carry there. People say my 2.4L minvan is under-powered, but if I floor it so it downshifts and let the 4 valves/cyl breath at high rpm I can pass easily. Don't be afraid to spin your engine. That is where the HP lies.

Also, if you never floor it going up a hill, you never get to see the billowing cloud lit up by the HID headlights of the guy tailing you at night.
Between that and my shadow in front of me, I'm all smiles heading to work early in the morning. ![]() |

You guys need to try maintaining and repairing your cars as they're not supposed to bellow smoke , not even under full load .
Am I the only one here who remembers these when new ? . I doubt that .

Actually if you own a euro model, removed the ADA, EGR and/or ALDA. You will see a black cloud behind the car if you have the peddle smashed to the floor and climbing a hill.....Its normal, not enough oxygen in the air.....Typically a person will back off the throttle to not allow so much fuel into the cylinders....

Only see the smoke when the sun's down, I'm crawling up a hill, and my tail is lit up by somebody's xenon's... Otherwise, not really a puff so far as I can tell. Pretty sure I need valve seals... but I'm only 38 so can't be bothered to care enough and change them.

Ha! Semaphore signals & flower vases. Not only do I remember them, I remember my Uncle Harry's shiny, new 1953 VW, I also remember dad's reaction (during a trip from California to Nebraska) when people would crowd around to get a look at it. They barely noticed his new 1954 Plymouth Belvedere. Don

And the power to the window washing fluid spraying being the connection to the spare tire air valve.....

Oh GOD! I hate those headlights!!!! Specially since our cars sit at a normal height and now a days all the new vehicles you need step ladders to get in....

One of these idiot inspectors failed my Dads Euro '66 250SE for the fog-lights, citing a Virginia regulation prohibiting more than 4 headlights on a vehicle. (This car had US sealed-beams installed by a PO, as the Mercedes Euro lights were also prohibited back then) We removed the fogs, passed inspection, reinstalled the fogs, and Dad took the car to other inspectors after that without any hassles. At that time, my Mom also had a '70 VW Squareback with the washers powered off the spare tire. I've only seen pictures of the flower vases. Happy Motoring, Mark

Those semaphores, for those who have not seen them... were little sticks right behind the front door about head height... the interesting thing is that in Germany at the time...
if you were in a parking space and put out that little arm YOU HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY... yikes... I was there in 1953 ... four years old... we had a 1950 Buick brought from the States.. some of the streets were so narrow it would not go down them.. but a VW would...

There shouldn't be any visible smoke during the day (black, blue, or white). At night with headlights shining through, you will be able to notice a little smoke as you accelerate. It shouldn't smoke constantly either.
Billowing clouds are bad. ![]()

Ever seen a simi climbing a hill and see the black cloud? Ever see tractors producing a black cloud? If the right combination of oxygen and fuel isn't present you will get a cloud...This can be because of environment or mechanics.. Red necks increase fuel out put to purposely create a black cloud... I am not saying anymore because you are always right no matter what and I see this in other threads.... Quote:

Yea... had to google semaphore signal... just saying.
I did drive a rusty Mini in England that had the signals, but they had long since seized up. Sort of like the rear axle when the brake servo flaked out. Fortunately, I wasn't in the car when that happened. I don't recall if it smoked much... probably did. |
