My new ride: Green 1980 300D
I was going to fix my 1978 300d up but decided to get a new one since it was going to be a fair amount of work and the body has some rust issues. Too bad because the engine was running well. I will be parting it out once I take what I need for the new one.
So I got this 1980 300d in an amazing shade of green! Someone had bought it from the original owner, had it a couple weeks and had to sell it. Has all original papers and service receipts. Some rust in places but much better than my last one and hopefully i will have time to keep this at bay.

I had the injectors on my 78 rebuild a couple years ago so I started swapping those out. The first one looks a little funky though. The others were ok. Any thoughts on this? The other one is the one that was on the 1980. It was knocking a bit so thought I'd switch them out.

I cannot read the engine number and need that in order to order new belts, which it needs. Any other way to figure this out?

If it is the original engine you may be able to run your vin in the epc and get it that way.

It is Agave, it's a color I considered for my car. Really stands out, in a good way...at least IMO.

Variation in injector muck could be due to timing chain elongation as well as begin of delivery

yeah the color really got me. depending on the light, it either looks great or completely hideous.
i need to go through and fix most of the usual things that i had to with my last car, shifter bushings, bypass rheostat, fix door latches, that kind of stuff. did the fuel filters and an oil change. swapped a few of the injectors but am waiting on more injectors shields. lots of leaking so need to figure that out too. coolant looks rusty so i'm going to flush it all out with just water at some point. i started to swap out the door latches but stripped a few of the allen bolts. i guess i'll have to drill them out unless someone has a good idea?

i want to take out the instrument cluster and do a couple things. in the meantime can i put in the one from my 78? the only reason i ask is because they have different speedometers. the one on the 78 goes higher.

I think a 1980 300D would have the OM617.912 non-turbo motor. I am pretty sure that the turbo motor was introduced in 1982, and thus if your car has the original motor, then it is probably the .912. The engine number should be near where the oil filter is on the block of the motor.
Quote:
To remove the speedometer, you would need to remove the speedometer cable and the screws that hold the speedo in. Once you see it, you'll figure it out.

thanks. yes is it non-turbo but when i go to order belts there are a couple options and it asks for the engine number. when it stops raining i'll see if i can read it but was having a hard time.
here are a couple pics of the inside. it's in pretty good shape, though there are lots of cracks on the dash and some wood coming off. luckily i have the other car for the wood. maybe i'll get one of those dash covers. first aid kit still has all the stuff inside! i love the stereo but will maybe update the speakers.
