There was this mother who did not like me because her children would get off the bus when I would pull into their neighborhood. She called the cops on me one time saying I "harassed" her children because they were fighting one time and I honked at them to try to make them stop. Then when I was at Walmart I was not too close to my car to stop her but I saw her push her cart into my car. I did not want to confront her because she clearly had a few screws loose. Now someone else has that vendetta as I on longer have that car.

You should come down for the Lake Mirror Classic sometime. They didn't have many, if any, examples of a w123 there this year so I am thinking about entering mine next year.

Good conclusion/ending!

Worst thing I hated during apartment life was not being able to fix my own car. Previous elderly manager even told me not to "wash" the car even though I was just quick detailing. To her having a towel and motioning to clean the car was already washing even if there was no water involved.

Previous apartment we lived in the manager kept telling me not to work on the car. Like you I had no choice then, but to sneak out my repairs and do the work when he's either not home, or at night. And try to do it quietly also!

That Lakeland college campus is pretty great! We visited there about fifteen years ago when vacationing. I have a niece and nephew who went there also.

In your picture the building with the red drum form does not look familiar to me. I suspect it is not by FLW and is a new building.

I used to affectionatly call My Dad a slumlord as overtime He bought up all of the Apartments in the Building till it all belonged to Him.
On the Flip side of the of the Slumloard issue it can take about 3 months to evict someone and during that time they stay in the Apartment for free.

Tenents abuse stuff. He would buy a knew Refrigerator and in 3 weeks the Handle was broken.

When one Tenent left they removed a Cabinets Door that had a Mirror on it but still wanted the Deposits back in full.

One time a Tenant who was leaving poured dried Grain down the plumbing and it plugged up the plumbing when Water soaked into it. That Tenant also wanted their full deposit back when they left.

This is the one I like. My Father evicted someone and they stayed for free the 3 Months plus He owed for previous Months Rent. My Father got a judgment from the Court on the total amount He owed. Having a Judgment does not mean you get your Money.

2 Years later the same Guy showed up as He wanted to open an Auto Repair Shop and needed a Loan to do so but My Fathers Judgment was holding up the Loan.

He ask My Father to forgive the Judgment. My Father said that if He paid what He owed (no interest was added to what was owed) that would clear up the Judgment.

Those are just a few of the stories I remember.

Absentee Apartment House Owners often hire a Management Company to take care of the Apartments. They do the bare minimun needed and the Repair Guys barely know which end of a Screwdriver to use.

I just recently had a tenant take the toilet seat and demand her deposit back before she returned the keys.

On one hand she didn't understand that she needed to put the old seat back if she had a love affair with her carpeted toilet seat and she expected the entire deposit. And on the other we had quite a standoff about the keys, at which point I told her that the cost of a new seat would be taken from her deposit, in addition to labor and the cost of changing the locks, which I did anyway since she actually made her whole deposit thing or no keys back into a threat first off after being an excellent tenant for several years. It was hilarious because she was that dumb, but also really really annoying and stupid for no reason.

Once her supposed leverage was gone, and I still had her deposit, she returned the dam toilet seat, and she got her full deposit back minus 150 bucks for new door locks and the bother of giving 4 other tenants new keys, and they were equally annoyed with her.

She is now living with her parents

I have never ever rented. Actually, I did rent for 4 months once, but it was more than I could handle and I got outta there.

Since we own a house, I get to deal with bylaws instead. We have a small (25ft) sailboat and every spring/fall we drag it home for a week to prep it for launch or winterize it. Neighbours seem to think that contravenes some bylaw. Lucky for me, as part of my job I write some of the bylaws for our county and am pretty familiar with the book. The bylaw on boats and campers in residential zoned lots is currently suspended pending a council decision that won't be made for years to come.

Long story short, before you call enforcement on someone, know what you are accusing them of, and whether its actually illegal. Also know who you are accusing. The enforcement guys and I had a nice coffee and chat while gesturing angrily as though someone was actually upset. We laughed when we got back to the office, and closed the file having followed due protocol.

I still don't know/care which of the neighbours called us in. I just wish they had the balls to man up and talk to me before jumping to have my tax dollars solve a not problem.

No one has approached me when working on the car. Though, I have not done that much. Just removed the blower motor and dash on my w201 and removed the battery on my w123.


For everyone that says that they will never rent or that is why they buy homes. I would if I could... but sometimes your best option is to rent.

I probably would have bought a house by now if I had the landlords some of you are talking about. My only real gripe with this place is the lack of garage, which with clutch problems and 6" of snow sitting around is getting to be rather irritating.

I was forced to rent for 12 years as housing prices and absurd post-Carter administration interest rates kept me locked out of buying for most of that time.
My last apartment didn't bother me about brief, minor auto repairs. But had irritating rules about 'no bicycles on the balcony' and making me 'gut' my kitchen every year when the roach guy came round to spray. The first time I failed to remove some utensils, they threatened me with eviction!
When I first moved in, they allowed me two parking stickers. Then a year later they said I could have only one. So I duplicated that sticker to let me park three vehicles. After three years, when they finally caught me, I started house-shopping.
Since then, I inherited some rental property from my folks. So I guess now I'm the slumlord!
