Picture of the quilted stuff
I used the quilted fiberglass from McMaster-Carr. Just finished it last night and took a picture today. Made a big difference in the sound in that the hood sounds solid when you close it now. No more cheap tin sound like you hear on a rice burner just a nice solid thunk. Also when running just has that nice benz diesel rythem, not metalic sounding as before when the hood had no padding.

rebootit,
My '81 300SD has the original type waffle padding that's getting crisp. I'm wanting to replace it as the engine seems REAL noisy for an SClass car. Do you find that the new quilted pad is more effective than the original waffle type pad? I have installed a new pad on a W123 car and it made a MAJOR difference, so I plan to try it on this one. I think when they get all dry and brittle they lose the ability to absorb the sound. I think your idea is great as well as making an additional sound chamber to go behind the engine. Mine still has the original padding around the engine (at least I think it does...nothing underneath but a lot behind the engine). A new waffle pad is about $40, but I'd certainly rather do the quilted if it works better. I'm anxious to know any opinions...

Car never had the pad on it since I have owned it. Had some chunks here and there but I brushed them off long ago. Had been meaning to replace the pad for the past year but something else needed doing first. This thread got me thinking about it and I orderd the material last Friday when I ordered a new trunk seal and hood release latch from fastlane.
This car has a very quiet engine for a Mercedes diesel. It used to be much louder but a valve adjustment and fuel additives have made it purr. Also it may just be me but a neighbor commented last week as well about how quiet it was after I changed out a leaking oil return line from the turbo to the pan. I guess lower engine noise would escape from a leak there but wouldn't expect that much. Jim |

Electrically operated vacuum swtch?
I have been browsing the online parts catalogs and found this item. It is a black plastic cylinder partially wrapped by a gold metal box with mounting ears. It has a two prong electrical connector and three vacuum connections. What is it ? Where is it? and What does it do?

Ryan Z:
Sorry no part numbers as the invoice was thrown away a while back. As I recall, I searched the McMaster-Carr web site using search terms like noise reduction, sound reduction, etc. McMaster has several products other than quilted nylon for noise reduction for industrial applications because of hearing damage caused by loud noise. Also, the McMaster quilted nylon is rated for sound/noise reduction. There are other manuf. of quilted nylon with more noise reduction that I would now consider instead of the McMaster product - up to 2-3 times more noise reduction. The McMaster quilted nylon was about 1/2 to 1/3 the price - a valid consideration. FYI, the US Army uses quilted nylon in their trucks to reduce engine noise - they use the more expensive product. A Google search for quilted nylon sound reduction should return several places to buy the quilted nylon with more noise reduction. By the way, my installation of quilted nylon is working very well. Good Luck!
