So, I bought a car on Ebay...
So its 753 miles from Barrington RI and Shertex will be passing the torch to me.
Well, in his listing he said that you could go nearly 800 miles on a tank of fuel. I can't imagine a better time to test this theory. MPG factors. Its Fall, no AC needed. Its mostly highway it will be just me and the D for 11 hours Found this quote on mpg "You don't have to go easy to get 30. I drive 80-90 on the highway two hours a day, then drive in the city for about another hour or so. Driving like a madman, I get 29mpg. Driving a tad easier, I get 31mpg. If I drove the 700+ miles all highway, even at 85mph, I'm convinced I'd still get 33-34mpg." with a 23 gallon tank, I need to achieve nearly 33mpg average to make it all the way home. Because I drive like an old man and the car is in good shape (forum member cared for) I believe I'll have plenty of room for error. The tanks slightly larger than 23 gallons and I'll be driving south, which means it will be down hill the whole way. ![]()

also, I'd like input from all 606 owners on what I can do for and to the car to make it happy.

Should b a fun trip! Might work unless you spend 6 hours racing and idling through nyc.

Yes, I will be interested to see my theory actually put to the test! All of my driving has been mixed highway/city. Your driving habits will help....I tend to opt for hard acceleration.

If you're coming into NC on I-85 give a yell if'n you got time for coffee. Always good to meet a forum member. There's a Sheetz station off of NC exit 212 that is really nice and has fresh diesel. Can meet there, I live about 14 miles south of it.

I think I'll take 81 and skip NYC. I can't imagine that going through NYC will be quicker than adding a few miles and skipping the traffic.

Yes, take a wide berth around NYC....we'll help you map out a route. Our daughter lives in Charlottesville so we've become experts!

It will be really close. I've owned mine for a year/13k miles now and always see 28 city/32 hwy with AC on. Always. On the highway, I maintain 80 uphill or down and all my highways runs have been up the I81 corridor through the Allegheny mountains of PA, 700 miles round trip.
Back the speed down a bit and you will probably make it. If you did it non-stop, you would really have some bragging rights..... |

My thoughts on the subject:
Fill the tank all the way to the very top. Slow starts. Start coasting when the traffic light in front of you turns red. Set cruise when you can. Locate several convenient diesel pumps in the last 100 miles........in case you get nervous. Make sure you know how to restart the car if you do run out of diesel 20 miles from home. Good Luck.

Yeh 77 is way West of me. I'm a mile from the NC/VA border on hwy 39. Might say hi next time we ride the bikes to maggie valley....or if we ever get that Asheville Mercedes meet and greet going.

I routinely do 800 mile tanks in warm weather with mixed highway and town, but not so much in cold weather. See my thread here on my record tank of 858 miles. New personal record, 858 miles on one tank - '95 E300D
I think you can do an 800 mile tank relatively easily with all highway miles. Let us know how it goes. Rgds, Chris W. '95 E300D, 406K

First of all, congrat's on your purchase. I thoroughly enjoyed the '95 I had (exact car as yours, colors and all), and would not mind having another. I see no problem getting 31+mpg the way you will drive it. When I bought mine, it had about 30 miles on a full tank (seller reset the trip meter when filled up the tank). The first week I had the car, I drove it like I stole it most of the time. When I filled it up, it had exactly 600 miles on the trip odo and it took exactly 20 gallons....Rich

If this is the 98 E300 606.962 listed in Shertex's profile it ought to have a 21.1 gal tank. Thats the tank that came in every Diesel W210 to my knowledge.
The reserve light should come on with ~2 gals remaining. My 99 used to get between 30-32mpg on its 110 mile a day commute. That was 30 miles of heavy slow and go traffic and the rest at 70-80. B99 will drop that by 10% because the turbo will be on more often.
