Engine Removal Without Crane

So, tried pulling the sway bar, but will admit, you all were right, the engine has to be removed... Trouble is, since the auto is not moveable there is no room to get a crane in. Now what?

I sure miss Sandy Eggo where there was an aircooled community. I now know that I need to pay, as why they no longer help. There is no one out here with a diesel Mercedes and no good mechanic willing to work on her. All alone to mess up on my own...

B.T.W., now I am saving up an even bigger amount and then when I need work, take her to the good doctor in Sandy Eggo, versus a mechanic or technician. Only a seven hour drive so only issue would be missing couple days of class.

Can you approach the engine from the side if there's no room from the front? Can you build a chain block frame around the TD? It doesn't need wheels since you dont have to remove the engine completely.

Sixto, thank you so very much! Can't beleive I forgot my manners earlier...

What do you mean? Maybe need to be more clear. This is a one car garage that is fairly narrow and shelves on one side with furniture on the other. There is a auto door to the rear of the wagen and a small human door at the front driver's side. I thought a crane have to have three and a half feet of clearance?

So, pull up and part way do it? Maybe a jack with some wood do it?

This is where I wish there was locals to at least give an idea or two. A hand be nice as have to reach from the front to keep the sides even.

You could use a cherry picker from the side if there were room. Is there one that comes apart that you can erect in tight quarters? There are some ideas in this thread for fabricating an A-frame hoist - Steel Pipe A-Frame Engine Hoist: How To? - THE H.A.M.B. .

This may explain why I couldn't get the hose off...

Guess need to do a vinegar flush though the coolant once done?

Thank you so very much!

That lead to this: 1 Ton Capacity Foldable Shop Crane

Not as pricy as I thought and as you suggested, comes apart. If I am seeing right, the legs come off, so should be able to finagle into the garage and get the feet under the front or side. So, will fiddle a bit more today and we all can think. I mean, might be too in a hurry/rash...

I have pulled a 616 using a harbor freight chainfall, and a yoke made of chain instead of a load leveling bar. I think I hung it from a loop of 5/16" chain over a 2x8 (important, w/ the 8" side vertical). Span of the beam was probably 10 feet, given that I got the car in the bay. I'll take luck but can't recommend it. Better double up on the 2x8's if you try the same- wood's cheaper than adverse outcomes.

This anecdote does not constitute engineering advice. Please consider the safety of yourself and others when lifting heavy things.

I found thisEngine Hoist for $100. Don`t know how far mesa is from Phoenix.

Engine hoist (2 ton)

engine hoist

Tucson
Cherry picker engine hoist

Prescott $95
Engine Hoist

If you have an over head beam, you can use this Chain Fall with an engine tilter. $100

This is a 1/2 ton 1000lb one, would be ok for an engine. If pulling the trans also a 1 1/2 ton would be better.
Vintage Chisholm-Moore 1/2 Ton Hoist - Cyclone Model M

Here is an engine tilter for $40

I don`t fully follow this thread, you pulling the Engine or Sway Bar?

The SB can be removed w/o removing the engine.

Why not just rent one? It's standard fare in most rental stores.

The sway bar is out! My dog is wondering why I threw a auto part into the back yard! I was just so happy and had to release some of it...

Two issues. One was the rusted heater core and tubing so wasn't coming free. Thought I could avoid the headache, but just dove in and figured replacing a heater core was more doable than engine fiddling.

Second was the washer were rusted so good on the sway bar, thought it was part of it... Once I noticed one was acting loose, worked and tapped it off along with the other side. Having a one pound dead blow is SO nice! Light enough I don't do damage (can't feel how hard I use my hands due to autism) but just enough to tap.

ll told, last try was only twenty minutes.

What was a help was instead of leaning over the engine, I climbed onto the engine, then squatting wiggled most of it up. Got down and finagled the rest of the vacuum lines out of the way.

So, thank you all for the help! Now if anyone needs to do crane work, there is some wonderful ideas.

As for the chain on a joist, I can run the calculations using a point load or U.D.L., so maybe some day when I build a little studio, figure out a way to nose in an auto and design the structure strong enough. I knew there was a reason why I have to know structural systems and loads!

Because works better to assume the worse and prepared. Then when things go better as they have, one can feel even happier! So, I go in to rent, and not foldable, then no problem, as know where to go for one that is.

Ha! I've done that before -- throwing stuff that's been a pain ! When I did our deck over, I banged the slats (mounted on the outside with nails) out of the railing by moving along and taking a giant swing with a 1.5-foot long crowbar at every one. Some of them flew almost 20'!

Autism affects the sensation in your hands? That stinks.

Glad to have a fellow Christian exhibiting the same behavior! Didn't Jesus do a similar behavior, now that I think about it?

I can feel just fine, especially when it comes to textures; can feel the print on the page. What it is the difference is disconnection between limb and brain so don't know how hard we are doing things. I have slammed doors off hinges when I am over stimulated as think I am just shutting. The last one was my bedroom door. I used Made in the U.S.A. duct tape to hold the screws in and it worked! Or punched things when I think I am smacking them and caused a dent... Partly knowing my strength, but also knowing when too much. Even includes when to quit. So I didn't realize I was about to snap the bolt off because of autism, low blood sugar, and tired, which lead to all this. Some day I might figure out a method... Though now if I am frustrated, low blood sugar, or tired, drop the tools and correct if possible.

B.T.W., couldn't help myself and set the replacement sway bar in place. Oh feels so good! What should be next? Got quite a few things to put back... Sway bar and control arms, electrical wires and connectors, vacuum lines, oel line, valve cover, coolant hoses (soaking now in vinegar), battery tray (also soaking now in vinegar) and battery, replacement mono valve, guage cluster, brake booster and master cylinder, and kick panel.

Is there a source for the special zip ties?
