Ok.. Didn't answer my question so I assume that you do have the old rad to put back in there. I say good luck if you don't have one or ever need to replace it because of a broken upper hose "neck". They're not easy to find and about twice as expensive. Probably because the "turbo" rad is much better at doing it's job an the mounting locations are interchangeable.

Why don't you just fabricate a plug for the overflow tank hose and be done?

thanks guys for all the information! i get the impression that the occasional dumping of coolant became politically unacceptable (in the U.S. anyway) during the production run of this car.

Phillytwotank, no, it's gone. if i can get away with adapting the expansion hose bib/neck to a radiator cap, then i agree, that's a much easier approach to the problem!

actually, the tank STILL has the drip hose off the radiator cap, and if the car overheats, it'll STIll dump coolant on the ground.

I route the hose to another tank (I use a Zerex G-05 bottle ) so ZERO coolant gets on the ground, and it'll suck it back into the car if it gets low.

I don`t know if it was politicaly unacceptable when these cars were built. I don`t think the term Political Correct had been invented then.

Antifreeze is lethal to animals when they drink it (humans too) when it pukes on the ground. ever see it puddled on the pavement in a parking lot?

And it is suppose to be leathle to the environment yadda yadda yadda......

I don't know if this was the case with the Mercedes cars, but on my Ford it would routinely spew out enough coolant to leave the top of the radiator core uncovered. If I put in enough to cover the core, it would just puke it out again next time I drove.

i dunno charlie, the thread struck me as kind of indecisive. i have higher priorities than this (fixing sunroof drain) but i will be keeping an eye out for intact 300D NA and/or W116 300SD radiators to see if they fit. the car still hasn't been to santa cruz FWIW, i still have a stupid full-time job....

Yeah I had one of those, now I have this stupid daily retirement getting in the way of any projects.

There is a 81 300D NA in the SJ south yard, but didn`t pay any attention to the radiator. that was on Tues. Did notice it has a fairly new Bosch alt. think it is a 80amp.

my engine bay is going to look so sweet after this.... it's hard for me to focus on the functional before the aesthetic.
