Why remove the fuel filter?
Depending on how liberally WD-40 is applied, you might change the oil after replacing the glow plugs. B100 might be better suited to loosening deposits on the glow plug tip. I don't know if it's acceptable to drip B100 into the crank case. Rube Goldberg would use an ultrasonic dental scaler with a very long tip ![]() Sixto 87 300D |

Unfotunately the most frequent problem is when the Glow Plug Body is stuck and will not rotate and the Hex Head of the Glow Plug Snaps off.

I have heard of a hydraulic approach before but no details of exactly how. Now I know the approach used or one of them at least. Parts and pieces are easily fabricated for this method. The prechamber puller was nice as well.
This item and the others could enter the rental program to recover any costs of fabrication. |

This tool is pretty handy - a user on board has used it and removed very hard to budge plugs, I have also seen it used on a different engine - same problem though,
![]() Provides even pulling force similarly this would be wonderful ![]() you rotate the body of the tool and it pulls it straight. I havent used either, but have done them at the engine temperature at 105C with it running, I cranked them loose, shut off and they literally were easy to undo - like spark plugs.

split nut
I used that split nut tool to remove 4 of 6 stuck plugs on my 95. By the third plug, I had destroyed the split nut hinge. The forces to remove these plugs was too much for the little pin hinge to take. For the last stuck plug, I had to find a nut in my odds-and-ends pile and cut it in half with a dremel tool and hold it in there. It was a huge pain to use, but it worked. I used a lot of the spacers too. I bought this tool thinking it would never work, but I was willing to try anything. It worked long enough.

I have seen this tool used in two ways
1 - the split nut held stationary with spacers in the back and the glow plug turned. 2 - the glow plug held stationary and the split nut turned to pull the plug. Not on MB though, which procedure did you use? the other tool is actually a shell type nut, a long threaded collared and cut sleeve is placed over the stuck plug, the shell is then threaded on the sleeve and tightened, it pulls out the plug as you tighten. I have heard the humvee diesel requires this tool to service its glows

split nut
I turned the glow plug with a 6 point socket. There is not enough room for a wench to turn the split nut way down there next to the head - and if you were lucky enough to get a wrench in there to turn the nut, it would be impossible to get a purchase with anything other than an open end wrench, and we know how that would turn out.
Removing stuck glow plugs is the worst job I've done on any car, ever, a close second is the window regulator in my 85 300td. Dreadful terrible dirty job.

If the end of the GP seats and keeps Carbon from foring around the body between the Sealing Area and the threads that eliminats another area. Except for a loose Glow Plug that was not fully seated to seal no one has ever commented on the other reasons Carbon gets by that area. As long as you have normal combustion it is not likely Carbon will build up around the Tip of the Glow Plug to the extent that it traps the Tip.

My guess is incompletely atomized fuel hitting a glowing plug. A plug 'cools' to the temperature of the prechamber after the glow cycle so why would carbon prefer to collect on the glow plug tip?
