V 6 diesel
 

Please help settle an argument a friend has purchase a small boat and he claims it has a v 6 Mercedes diesel. Does such an animal exist?? It is in the under 200 hp catagorey. Or can u point me in right direction to look for info. Am asking for plate on engine info but he can't find and due to engine placement cannot tell for sure it valve cover has symbol.Thank you for any help

Don't know if it helps but I know all the way up to the Actros MBZ uses V6 configuration instead of the industry standard I6.

All of the V6 engines except the OM642 are large, heavy duty truck engines.

I'm a truck driver i driven freightliners, Sterlings with mercedes engines and they are inline never seen a V6 in a late truck. The old detroit used to be V6 the new detroit is inline 6 so is cummings and catterpillars

Probably installed in buses or COE straight trucks.

Correction: As stated in post #3, the more recent Actros trucks are equipped with V6's from this family.

As of now Cummins, DD, Cat, Man, Nissan, Renault, Mack and Volvo all use I6 for their HD engines (12L+) The only one I know of that uses V6 is Mercedes.

And I should know this, I engineer these engines for one of the aforementioned companies. I actually tore apart a 13L (if I remember correctly) Cummins I6 a week ago to look at.


And btw, Detriot Diesel is now owned by Mercedes.

MTU was the off road arm of Mercedes- and they bought DD some years back. Then they sold DD/MTU to a European conglomerate group which in turn sold it to Tognum group. Mercedes/MTU no longer owns Detroit Diesel and has not for perhaps 8 years.

I worked for UPS awhile ago and I remember being told that the medium duty engines in the delivery trucks were either DD or Mercedes. The reason behind that I was told, was because the ones that had Mercedes valve covers were actually DD just rebadged as Mercedes. But those engines might have been in there for a few years by that point.

Question - Is there any reason the inline configuration is used so often with large vehicle diesels? I'm guessing Mercedes, along with the rest of passenger car manufacturers except for BMW, stopped using it in their cars because of packaging concerns in relation to the engine bay of a modern car.

Just wondering,

Durability and ease of maintenance....and the physical design of a truck chassis....
