Well, out here in Indiana they don't want cars or even light trucks in the truck fuel area for this reason. Trucks have to have a fuel permit which they buy annually. With that fuel permit they get a discount on the taxes collected at the pump. That is reflected in the pump price and it is $0.08 to $0.12 cents less then the auto/light duty vehicle price. So if you pull in to those truck pumps, they will "*****" about it and tell you that you either have to come in and pay cash and then they add the tax or bring in your card and then they do your credit card after you pump. But no doubt they will tell you that they have a pump for auto's and light trucks on the other side. So far as I can tell, no one sells truck diesel in Indiana without a "Labeled" car diesel pump.

Over the last 25 years, I've driven in all 50 states, and filled in a good many of them. Most of these fills were with my pick-up, with only the last 3 years with a Mercedes.

There are a few stations that have issues with a small vehicle in the big rig lanes. Sometimes it is because on cut off the big and fast flow nozzles in a car or light truck, the nozzle will dump fuel on the ground at shut off. Another reason is a car does not use both nozzles like a big rig, so the station wants me to use their car diesel pump. My pick-up has tanks on both sides (900 mile range), so I usually talk my way into a big rig lane, especially since I frequently have a trailer.

The worst state has been Oregon. There's a law where fuel cannot be self pumped, and most Oregon truck stops have insisted that I go into the car lanes. Now, I just drive through without fueling.

Ron

PS With my pick-up and trailer, if I have to use a car pump to fill both sides, I have a orange cone to leave in place while I reverse the truck's position. Most everyone at the stations would just prefer dealing with this in the big rig lanes.

I have read here that the states with the law against owner fill ups do not enforce the rule for diesel fillups. it's only for gasoline (due to the flammability) not for diesel. NJ and OR both have this rule, and exception.

I think the all are. I've been to dozens of them all over the country and they all seem to be similar.

Vstech,
You are correct on the NJ, not enforcing the attendant required to fill up diesel fuel. I am not sure of the exact reason, some places will assist, others you are on your own. I use a smaller truck stop and pump my own. Gatta love the fast delivery pump. Wow, do those dollars add up quickly !!!

Krogers grocery store now has diesel. You automatically get .03 off with your card. I have gotten as much as .30 cents off per gallon.

Oregon has tax vouchers like the ones in Indiana talked about above. What really pissed me off about Oregon when I use to travel up there was filling up at night. Local gas stations would advertise the price of regular diesel, and fill it for you... all fine... but at night these places were closed. The only places open where truck stops, they would advertise the price of the diesel with the voucher, making it imposable to shop for the best price. I stopped buying diesel in Oregon at night. I could fill up in Yreaka and drive to Corvallis, drive around where ever I needed to go, and then fill up in the daylight at a normal gas station, and almost make it all the way back to Sacramento.

Why is it that CA, one of the most restrictive states, is easier to fill up in then Oregon? ARG

I fill up using the truck-sized nozzle whenever I can find it. Sometimes it has that annoying "ring" on the end -- a flared nozzle end, and so it won't fit in the tank fillers and I have to hold it upright the whole time I fill. The best ones are the ones that don't have this; it'll go in and sort of wedge itself into the filler and I don't have to support it.

There's no "truck stops" on the roads I travel much, but when I do travel, I'm not opposed to using them. Typically I look for an Exxon, BP, or Hess "regular car" station that has the diesel on a separate island. Minimum of fuss, still usually have the fast-filling truck nozzle, and just don't have to worry about it.

Knock on wood, I've never gotten hold of any contaminated fuel even filling up at small-town small volume fuel stations. Our 240 came to us with a gunky tank that took several filters and a tank removal/washing to deal with, but we've never introduced contamination ourselves that the filters couldn't handle.

The "annoying ring" helps keep the nozzle in the tanks of the big trucks.

Oregon will allow you to pump your own diesel if it is on its own pump, not connected with gas on the same tower thingy. An interesting note, there is a law allowing motorcycles self service.

Oh and heaven forbid the truckstops might advertise the price the truck drivers they are there for would need to pay. Having P.U.C. price listed has nothing to do with anyone's ability to price shop. That's like saying you can't price shop due to the .09 fed tax. It isn't random.

Speaking of gas station attendants!!! I had one pump about 6 or 7 gallons of gas into my 81 300D once and boy was I mad....I went inside the gas station store to buy some drinks and I come outside and he is pumping gas............I stopped him and had him fill the rest of the tank with diesel....did not pay for the gas....To my surprise there was no problem driving after.

I hate credit card surcharges , just call it a cash/voucher discount and be done with it.

Legally, thats the only thing it can be. Credit cards do not allow discrimination by merchants in their contracts. If somebody is adding a penalty for using a credit card the card companies throw a ***** fit.
