Anzo manufactures an LED tailight for the W126.

Completely street-legal-DOT compliant to FMVSS No. 108

If the light does meet FMVSS, it must be listed with DOT and the number will be molded into the lense.

Since I've been down this road as part of my career, I can guarantee you that proper ray-tracing software to design the tools and lighting, the proper vac-assisted molding processes, and testing to be DOT compliant is expensive. I very much doubt that these chinese companies offering LED and HID replacement crap do anything other than print DOT on their websites.

Yes, the LED replacement lights and bulbs are available. The entire light as shown on the benzworld website, does not appear to be compliant. Bright from directly behind yes, probably too bright, and not bright enough from off angles. Replacement "bulbs" are available that have an array, but notice that the LEDs are not in the same position as the filament in the original design bulb, which is an important detail when the lense and reflector optics are all designed around the light at the filament locations.

Put in what you want, I would love to see every one of these people go to jail and lose everything that they own in lawsuits. Won't happen I know, because there are enough un-educated people out there to keep buying illegal lights and running them, probably won't even get a ticket when they cause an accident.

Fix the original lights, seems like a simple task, and they are more than adequate.

It's amazing how many new cars these days are still being made with standard bulbs, where you might expect to see LEDs.

But it's not so amazing anymore when you realized how cheaply the car manufacturer can acquire bulbs-by-the-million for production... and make every car use the same bulbs.

Really nice project... I'd do it a tiny bit different but it's a really nice idea.

More than adequate, I beg to completely disagree. The w126 and w123s are some of the worst lit cars on the road. I can always pick out the back of an old MB at night because all you see is two dim red dots--much harder to see than just about anything else. Under braking it isn't much better, especially for those of us without a center tail light. One of my biggest gripes about these cars.

You could probably build something very usable with some prototype board from radio shack and a large quantity of LEDs. Someone I know did this with his passat's lights, they came out looking great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5FR89uS1EQ&feature=related

Note this will disable the cruise control unless you put a bulb in there somewhere.

I'd have to agree with you.

^ X2. A well installed set of LEDs would help a lot. Now, on a different note, I'm thinking of putting in black light in the instrument cluster and paint the needles with the original bright orange... someone told me that this would be harmful to my eyes because of the radiation; is this true?

Im not sure if it would hurt your eyes, but IIRC the c5 corvette has a stock dash lighting set up similar except instead of florescent colors the gauge numbers, dashes, etc are white.

i was thinking of how to fab up an LED tail light set up the other day. Just not sure were to get pc boards at.

There might be some benefit using incandescent bulbs driving during a snowfall.
There have been a few accidents blamed on snow covered LED traffic lights because they didn't generate the heat the old inefficient bulbs did.
