Glowplug removal
Pulled my GPs and reamed today...
Took some pictures, here are my GPs. ![]() ![]() I bought a 7mm drillbit from mcmaster. Jobber length was too long, needed to get a short bit. Was about $3.50. Coated it in mystic jt-6 grease. ![]() I had to do each hole twice (two greasings). The first time for most I had to work it in the opening a bit to get it past some initial resistance. This required pushing in, pulling out a bit, pushing in again and then working it a bit. I'd usually twirl it forward and reverse and would feel resistance decreasing. Usually pulling and regressing, I'd get it to bottom out the second time. Some had a lot of resistance to initially get in, others next to none. I'd get lots of fine carbon and a few chunks... ![]() ![]() After all that we blew it out by cranking. I pulled the injector spider, but even with the stop lever pressed, the pump side still leaked fuel onto the towel I had covering it...

Good pictures. BTW, the factory glowplug reamer is about $70 so you saved a bunch of money by using a drill bit.

I was going to get one from someone on this site, but timing didn't work out. For all but gp 5, having something else to hold on to would be nice. The short bit, mcmaster
28255A49 Metric Black Oxide High-Speed-Steel Short Length Drill Bit, 7mm, 74mm Overall, 19.9mm Drill Depth, 135 Degree Point Worked great and could get all the way with maybe 1/2 inch sticking out when all the way in. Very easy to work and any longer/larger and maneuvering around the oil filter at number five would be a bear...

Good pics of GP's. What did they look like when powered? Nice full length glow & no hot spots?
Some one must post some time some pics of GP's with good & bad glow patterns. Maybe some one has already.

I haven't tested these yet as I had a new set of bosch.
I tried feeding them 12A via my battery charger, but it was too smart to provide. I have a 25A power supply I'll try, otherwise the battery when I have a chance...

Dont bother with the power supplies, the battery is the only way, its what makes them glow when in use.
I only replace when they are bad. Thats why I bench test them.

A power supply should work for the 25a they are claimed to pull... To me, working under the injector lines is a big enough pain that replacing all of them as a baseline is worthwhile, IMO. Then I'll test the others and we can see which are good, keep them as spares for swapping when these good ones start to go. I prefer a baseline to replacing parts non stop - just don't have the time...
