Rear windshield glass

Last week while going out to eat I received a rather unpleasant surprise. A car going in the opposite direction threw a stone that hit and shattered the rear glass. So far I have been unable to locate a used one here locally. Any one living in a state bordering Louisiana who has a glass or knows where I can get one and could help me would be greatly appreciated. I would compensate you for your assistance.

The dealer wants over $800.00 for one so I can travel quite a ways for this amount.

The car is an 84 300SD and any 126 body style will work.

You can get a tempered one installed for about $300. And If you have a new seal they will install it for you also. Only differance is you will have to make a little jumper to connect the defroster.

Rear Glass

I've checked just about every glass shop in this area and nobody can get this glass. I'd gladly pay $300 or more if I could find one. I have a new seal so I can install it myself if I can get one.

I have three of them stashed away.....

Did you check your local junk yard

Usually there are a number of W123's in any junkyard, many have excellent glass. It is really very easy to remove the glass, especially if you do not have to save the rubber seal on the one you are taking out. Just cut the seal around withe glass with a razor knife, remove that plastic interior trim piece over the wires for the defrost, disconnect the wires and gently then with two people inside the car, push it out. I did it last winter and got one for $25.00 and installed it myself with family help. It really takes three people to handle the glass and get it out and re-installed. I see the car is a W126 and I know our Indianapolis Pick and Pull has at least two of them. Let me know if I can help you, but shipping could be difficult.

I just went to the Safelite website www.safelite.com and plugged in a zip code local to you. They list the laminated, heated version for less than $300. (Available in Lafayette.)

I did notice that if you select a non-laminated version, you get referred to "customer service referral line". Actually, IIRC the laminated version is the only one available for the W126.

Yes, if you go non-laminated they can get one. I went through the same thing with safelight, and used the glass doctor. A good local glass shop can get it and do it.

Thanks to all who replied and advised. I was able to find a used glass here locally for $150.00. Now just have to get it installed.

Any quality local auto glass shop should be able to do it correctly.

A friend of mine used to own a junk yard. He claimed that used glass frequently delaminates causing the cloudy area in the corners. He would sell the glass to someone that insisted but wouldn't warranty it because of the cloud.

the 126`s get cloudy in the corners from water wicking up between the two layiers of glass between the laminate. this usually happens as the gasket ages and shrinks.

There is a good supply of W126 rear windows in like new condition at our local PNP thanks to Hope and Change of our present Administration.
