I am in CA and do not pay the low $400 to $450 mentioned per car but
I do get a good rate from AAA. If I were not a member I would use
Geico or Progressive.

Being older helps, good driving record helps.
AAA asks me to report miles driven each year and that has a lot to do with it.
I put on thousands per month.

I do not value my cars very highly, hence I do not have comprehensive or uninsured driver, or theft.

We pay thru the nose in AZ to start with. I was with Geico and when my kid got his learner's permit last August I started shopping for rates. Nobody could beat Geico so I stayed with them, but due to having a 16 year old male driver in the house our rates went up about 75%. The kiss of death on your ins. costs is a male under 24, driving record be damned. Wife and I have perfect records with no claims other than windshield stars. The kid knows that his first moving violation will end his driving career until he is 18, unless he can figure out how to pay for ALL of his portion of the policy. One reason I bought the 123 is I know he's not going to be smoking any tires or driving 100mph. As far as the Merc is concerned, I only have PLPD on it, and it costs like 200 a year, cheaper than my old Ford truck and Suzuki Sidekick. We only keep full coverage on the wife's O4 Honda.

liability umbrellas cost more than you think. they are up in the $150-$200 range now plus you are required to carry a $500k liability on the car.

use the umbrella for house....+ + +

"liability umbrellas cost more than you think. they are up in the $150-$200 range now plus you are required to carry a $500k liability on the car."

I have 5 cars, a house, and 2 boats ( one with 350+hp) all with State Farm. My agent recommended an umbrella policy as backup to all of these and it lowered the individual costs on all to the point I was saving money and getting more insurance. Everyone's case may be different. The umbrella policy did go up with a 16 old daughter driving.

FYI, for the young drivers, my agent recommended getting them a safe, inexpensive car, and only keep liability on it. Designate them the primary driver on that car. My daughter got her license in Feb of this year and we are now paying about $700 a year on a ($2500) '98 Saturn. I have heard of other new drivers in the area being charged $2000 a year on newer, more expensive cars.

Designating your kid as driver of the cheapest auto is smart, as long as you make sure you're not excluding them from coverage on other cars. I believe that can be done in some states, but not here. The difference in rates between young males and females is astounding. Girls are downright cheap to insure compared to boys, at least in AZ. I bet it's that way everywhere.

I'm only saying what I was quoted. Of course you may have to pay more. And the required liability on your car policies will vary by state; the umbrella will usually require that you carry the max that they offer, which is 300K here.

But as I said before, the first $50K is the most expensive. That's because it is more likely to be tapped. Going from $50K to $500K will not raise the price by a factor of ten -- it's generally much less than a factor of two.

A basic $50K policy will leave you screwed if you drive a semi off the road. Or destroy someone's new S-class.

In the collective socialist state of Washington, my rates are $46.00 per month on my benz (liability only) and my daily driver 99 Ram Diesel is $66 or so per month (full coverage, comprehensive). It usually comes out to under $1300 per year. I am with State Farm.
