It's rare to see quotes like this one in the typical signatory text:
"Партия и положение принесут зажиточность и электричество к провинциям"

For those of you who don't know, it's Lenin's promise that electricity and party positions (i.e. organization) will bring both electricity and prosperity to the the provinces, i.e. what would later be the 14 socialist republics and independent/autonomous regions, called krai and oblasti, respectively, following the 1918 Bolshevik revolution.

In reality Lenin was the greatest "green" thinker of his time, the idea being to create free electricity from hydro dams to power the country's economy. Too bad it got hosed up later by Stalin and Co.

I am surprised anyone ever reads stuiff like this besides me, lol.

You can't be afraid to use the starter's on these engines. The starter's are big and overbuilt, they are ment to turn the engine over for a long time if needed. Not like the little baby starters on new gas cars.

They also have a lot of cranking amps, 1k is a lot for car.

I test drove an 83 300TD with a 2nd battery in parallel with the standard. Right front corner of the engine compartment.

we've had some cold mornings here in NJ last few days as well. 15F one morning as I went to start. 2 glow cycles, no pedal and after about 2 seconds of cranking the cranking started getting faster, and holding another 3 seconds or so (5 sec. cranking total) got it running.

Used to have a VW passat TDI (1996) and that was much easier to start. Even down to -5F I recall just doing two glow cycles and it fired almost instantly.......no prechamber on those TDI's which I would think would make starting harder too. But, that was with 95K on the clock vs. 231K on the old MB.

I studied Lenin quite a bit as a philosphy student. He is a legitimate intellectual, philosopher and statesman, not just a socialist.

As for the cold weather, I find once its at true 0 degrees F, my 84 300D will start fine, idle fine, but will run badly because the fuel is just too damn stiff. It sort of struggles at 1500 RPM and over. I let the tank go below 1/4 and it sat for a few days at 0 to 5 degrees. It started after some cranking, but I drove it around the block several times and it just plodded along and would nearly die at points. Keeping a full tank in cold weather seems like a good idea.

Give it some pedal and it'll start easier, MB suggests you hold it half way down...

TDIs are direct injection, direct injection engines will start better in cold weather because they don't have the prechamber. They'll also be noisier but will get better economy...

I third or fourth the motion on synthetic oil.

I was running 15W40 and when it got below 20F I started having trouble. When it did finally start at about 32F it was only after I had cranked on it several times and got the oil flowing finally.

You could tell that all the sudden it was spinning faster.

I changed the oil today to Rotella Synthetic 5W40 and it spins/starts like a champ.

It's 21F out right now and I had no problem.

The Texas Panhandle is a whole other, other country...

Check the weather in Amarillo, TX.

And this isn't even the coldest we've had this year already.

It has been down to single digits at least three nights so far.

Adjusting valves in the single digits, yikes!
I've got an engine that has a problem or two, but it has been starting OK, until the other day with the single digits. Tried it last night at about 15 degrees I believe and still didn't start, going to try today as its going to be around 30. Battery charged, with jumpers on the running van. Someday I'll get it right.
