Does this qualify for the 'Cheap Wagon Club'?

This afternoon I picked myself up another Diesel Chevy Suburban. . .

The good-1988 3/4 Ton 6.2L 4x4 165k.

Good mechanicals.

Came with tons of paperwork, to include the owners manual and origional window sticker.

Interior is a 8 or 9/10

The bad- Not running. . .towed it home redneck style with a tow strap and used a '98 4 banger ranger (almost ripped the ranger's frame hitch off)

There is some problem in the electrical system where the starter supposedly runs constantly (im thinking keyswitch or relay). PO states the starter and silinoid are new (reman, bench testing to occur this week).

When we went to move it the rear brake line failed (no hydraulic brakes, e-brake only).. now I have this to mess with

Tires (year dated 33" from '99)

Typical New England salt road rust (door sills are intact, giant suprise)

PO reports transmission has a slight slip. When pressed for details he said he added fluid but hadent really messed with it, added some fluid. (in thinking transmission flush)

Reason for selling- Needs money to fix his ford lightning pickup ASAP.

Cost to me. . .$500. . . .I could scrap it for that much. . .

I was thinking......he could sell it for scrap; then spend that money on a 300TD and then become a member.

nah, no tear, the headliner needs attention, its in waaayy better shape then the last 'burban I owned. . . (comparative to other '80s domestics)

Old beater burbans or the diesel variety are a personal favorite of mine. . .hey are the absolute most functional vehicles I have ever owned. And plus, If this was a TD Id be compelled to restore it to a condition where I could not use it to haul stuff or subject it to other abuse, for the 'burban I feel no remorse. and the TD doesent have 4 wheel drive or the towing capacity the 2500 burban has..when I want to drive a benz I still have my SL-C. . .

Easy fix for the headline, a razor blade. I love 1973-1979 Chevy trucks with the round headlights. They are tanks and other than fuel are very cheap to own. I'd like a Suburban with either a 603, 4BT or 6BT in it. With 3kids the Suburban is the best family diesel out there when you consider safety. Wife says no to 3rd seat in 300TD, but Suburban would be OK.

I've owned an '87 and '91 suburban and just loved them. Mine were gassers and the old square boat body style like the above. For some odd reason I always loved the sound that it made when starting it. Something about the sound of the starter then the engine coming to life that was a really pleasing "car sound"........

Sweet deal VS. . .

To above. . .Im looking to switch the front clip out eventually with a '70s one. . I like the 70's front ends better then the 80's ones anyways (ive seen 70's to 80's front end clip swaps, I dont think the reverse would be a problem). . .there is a '78 in the yard with a good front end and the barn doors. . I think ill go snag them as I find thoes to be desirable to me. . .

If it gets the same mileage as my coupe and it's a Suburban, I think it's a good deal
