1999 E300 Transmission fluid and filter change - How many liters of fluid requried?

I'm getting ready to do a transmission oil and filter change on my 1999 e300 and curious if anyone has done this and knows exactly how many liters / quantity of oil is required for this task with the filter change.

Secondly what is the correct oil to use in this vehicle that is the best/recommended? I see that the Febi brand or the Mercedes brand are available and it appears some are a cautious using the Dextron II or Mobil 1 synthetic.

Thanks.

In early 1999 M-B stopped providing a torque convertor drain but if your car is an early '99 and has the torque converter drain then it will probably take about 7.5 litres. You are supposed to put about 4 in, then start the car and put through the gears and shut down then fill the rest of the way. Use only the M-B fluid in this transmission.

If your car does not have the TC drain then I would measure what comes out and replace that amount. It will probably be on the order of 5 litres.

You may also use the MB #3353 fluid designed for the 722.9 trans. It is backward compatible with the 722.6 and is usually a little cheaper.

IIRC Shell/Fuchs makes the MB fluids. All things being equal I'd use the MB products so that you know it is compatible. DexIII products w/o MB's special additive package have led to failures in the past.

Get yourself a new gasket while you're at it. Use MB branded oil only. 7.5 litres or thereabouts, and get a dipstick.

You won't have a drain on the TC so won't be able to get much out. You can disconnect one of the oil cooler pipes underneath the engine coolant radiator, run the engine, and flush nearly all the old stuff out that way. Be careful doing that.
