is there a version of internet explorer available for osX? i do not believe so. not since IE 5.0 waay back in ox8.5 era has ms made a version for apple... even though they are a large stockholder in apple stock... I'm pretty sure it's a browser problem. MANY web apps refuse to run in anything but IE, and that's simply cause the "java" they program in is arranged for ms's browser... suckky, but true.

If it's a java web start program, the browser is only used to download the program, using a 'jnlp' protocol URL

On the Mac, Java is a system service - not part of any browser's distribution [Opera, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Camino....]

IE for the Mac was abandoned after OSX 10.1, and was inferior even back then when compared to the other available options.

As highlighted in red, I guess we can thank Hewlett Packard for their role in this problem:

I don't get how some Mac users had intermittent success in the past...it must've been the right combination of local and remote Java versions. I've found many links related to this problem, including French and German MB enthusiasts.

I've found the aforementioned hpwin32.dll file in my Java cache directory at /users/username/Library/Caches/Java/cache/javaws/http/Depc-prod.startekinfo.com/P80/V1.9.243.1/DMEWA-net/DMdownload/DMjars/RNclient_native.jar/. So, how do we get that added to the java system library path?

The stack trace shows an example of how, if you set your mind to it and expend extra effort, you can write programs in [mostly] Java that are distinctly non-portable.

It seems to be using a native code library to the Windows Registry [itself a bad idea, with a horrible implementation] without a graceful failure when the native code cannot be resolved.

Errr... the low end Macbook is a 2.0GHz Intel core 2 duo machine. No, it isn't cheap, it's $1000. Yes, you can get something cheaper if you want. No, it isn't priced much differently from a comparably equipped Dell or other mainstream PC maker's laptop.
