Precautions on degreasing diesel engine to find oil leaks?
Is there anything I should know about degreasing the engine of a 300cdt before I begin? Will degreaser destroy rubber gaskets or damage injectors etc?
Thanks |

There are a lot of discussions of this topic in the detailing section. Simple Green and WD 40 are two things I recall that have been used successfully.

Vegitable glycerin is also good for degreasing.

I spray on Purple Power, and gently hose off. On stubborn area's, I spray a bit of brake cleaner. So far, no problems.

Get some long handled scrub brushes from the dollar store. Keep away from a pressure washer - terrible on old vacuum lines and I killed a hood pad once.

Allow the engine to cool first and make sure you don't spray cold water on a Hot injection pump. Sudden change of temperature is very bad for the close tolerances inside the pump.

Believe it or not, one of the best cleaners I've found is spray silicone lubricant and a big paint brush. I read about using it in a book on detailing. It does wonders for anything plastic or rubber and does a good job on removing that combination of dust and oil "film" that seems to be everywhere. Once it "lifts" the grime, the excess is easily washed off, leaving behind the reconditioning effect.

I've used the "Degreaser in an aerosol can" - pressurized kerosene, for the most part

have you had any issues with electrical relays under the hood since doing this? ive had past experience where atomized silicone airborne penetrates and settles on relay contacts causing them to fail intermittantly
