Does the 190D get no love?
I very rarely see people on this board who have a 190D or much less are asking questions about them. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but it seems that the 190D isn't as desired as the W123, W126, or even its similar era W124 brethren.
I realize the the 190D is relatively rare, but is it any less rare than a W124 or W126 (603 powered) diesel? Would a 190D stick shift be like a more modern 240D 4-speed, only quieter and more updated? I can imagine the ultra rare 190D 2.5 Turbo would be a rocket. I think it's just that there aren't that many of them. But perhaps they never break.
The back seat is a bit small for my taste, but I don't sit back there. |

I have a 1984 190D 2.2 with a 5 speed manual. Fun little car. It's in my garage now because it needs some work - the clutch that engages the fan stopped working.
You are right, the 190D is rarely talked about on the site. Guess very few people own them. |

I almost had a 190D 2.5 turbo... almost.. I really like those little cars
but compared to the W123 and W126 it has inferior build quality also the forum 190revolution.net has a big following among w201 owners |

I like them, but I disagree that the quality is suspect. They were built to be the entry level benz, so the trim is simpler. Most of the mechanical parts are the same as the 124 and even the 126.

I have a 190d-'87, my first MB, love it. has 172145 mi., runs great. 35mpg, only a few things need att'n.--my posts don't get many answers. haven't found a good service manual yet(tried CD & HAYNES). even the orig. radio works! jerry , in Daytona Bch.

The 190D is newer, and designed with less maintenance, so less need for help here IMO.
It is much more modern and more of a crisp handling car than the traditional Mercedes 123, my 190D turbo seemed faster than my 300D 603 cars, just more nimble I think. The 2.5l engine makes the car pretty quick and quiet for a diesel, the turbo even better. Fuel mileage is better than anything else M-B ever made I believe, and so quiet. Plenty of love here, just that most people on this forum seem to be here for older models. The 124 is beginning to make some pretty frequent appearances here now, but also not nearly as many as the older bodies.

I guess the simple trim and tiny size combined are the reason I never looked at them very hard. There's no attraction to me for owning a car that small. Other than that, AFAIK they're good machines.

My 87 190d is a true diesel benz ,its clocked over 250k and still a strong car.Im lucky to own a bevy of beauties, the 300d is great on long trips ,300cd all around car,and the 190d city driving seems to suit the car well.My objective is to have a wagon in the future ,just cant find any thats worth the price.

I would love a little 190D, but none were really available back when I used to have extra $.

201 was the entry level Benz at the time. Consequently a lot of them fell into the hands of people who didn't know how to take care of them, or couldn't afford to take care of them. The result was, not many of them survived. The current C Class seems kinda the same way. A pretty good car that tends to fall victim to mediocre owners.

I'd pick one up for a winter car next year if one came along. I like them, but they are kind of small and their interior leaves much to be desired.
