Ultimate W124 Diesel Swap???

:confused:I have an 86 5 speed 300E that is just begging for a Diesel swap. I have considered a OM603.912 6 cylinder, 0r a OM602 5 cylinder. ...but can't get the OM602.de29la Direct injection Turbo outta my head. This engine was in the Sprinter, Euro W210 and the Gwagen (in a slightly lower-power set up), but never in the W124. I have seen pics of it and am making a few assumptions here. 1) The lower block is similar if not the same as the Indirect versions (Shorter I would think) 2) If true, the engine mounts etc. would be the same. 3) The driveline would be similar as well, but I don't know which trannys were behind the W210 versions.a similar 5 speed manual would be VERY nice. Auto? Hopefully somthing easy like the 722.xxx My W124 has alot of room laterally... Any thoughts or should I just lay down for a nice nap and get this silliness out of my head?

I was under the assumption that Mercedes only made IDI diesels before the CDI.

Also, if you pick any MB diesel 1996 or newer, you're likely to run into ECU issues.

You will never find a direct injection 602 in the USA. They were never imported here and no E290's were ever imported through the gray market. If you want one, you'll have to buy a used one from Europe and ship it over here or through government surplus.

There is no real advantage to them. They have the exact same HP and torque as the IDI, require a computer to operate, require an intercooler and have a rotary injection pump. Their only advantage is slightly better economy.

If you want direct injection, your best option is to buy a totaled Dodge/Freightliner/Mercedes Sprinter and swap over all the OM613/OM647 parts.

Some true...

but the importing isn't a problem, they can be easily had. The government had a few on the auction block last summer from USMC G Wagons. The IDI vs DI torque/HP nymbers are similar, but the key is efficiency to get there. The Direct Injection has almost aways had WAY better fuel economy. The numbers are as much as 20% over IDI. The prechamber steals a lot of heat energy that can get sent to the rear wheels. No glow system is nice too. The noise is an issue as DI's are much louder, but can be dealt with. Not all versions were computer controlled either. The G wagens had them with NO computer to keep up with the KISS principle. I guess the question is will the cost recovery of DI over IDI ever make a difference? Probably not, but ya gotta admit, a VERY COOl swap!

I like the power, so I'd go the easy route and put in a 603turbo or if I could find one, a 606turbo. The 603turbo would be easiest since your car doesn't have the wiring/controllers for the later engine and transmission.

Personally, I'm looking for a nice Land Rover or maybe a Rubicon to stick a 603 in, ... kind of going the other way.

Or slap a 603 IP on a 606 and dump the computer all together...well except for the idle control unit.

It is more fun to think about and plan these conversions than to actually do them. Just buy the car the car that you want and spend your time on more rewarding pursuits.

Time? Got that solved

I fly airplanes for a living and have 21 days off this month...house is clean, again.....garage is spotless.....again......chores all done day one....again......read all the books I want....again......watch all the History Channel I want.....again.......still have to fill the other 18 days off....now back to the SWAP! I have been researching the 603.912 from a similar W124 300D. He is what is the same 1) Everything from the clutch back, even the 717.430 tranny 2) The fuel tank (some different plumbing obviously) and sending unit.....Here is whats NOT 1) The exhaust sytem 2) Ft springs are slightly fewer "points" 3)An oil cooler and radiator has to be intalled. BTW I am looking into the HVAC and Tempomat now. Sure would be nice to have a Euro A/C or even a simpler late 70's W123 style US version with a simple rheostat for compressor cycling. Did I miss anything?

Someone here said that the ACC unit is a different number, but I've used gas ones in diesel cars without any issues so I'm not sure. The ignition switch would be different, but a solenoid could be used (such as the switchover valve) to utilize the vacuum shutoff, probably other items too such as wiring/relays/fusebox but for the most part, the engine is simple and there are few wires.

X2, then put on a Holset turbo, and massive intercooler!

The 606 will always out HP the older diesels because of its head, 4 valves per cylinder can flow a lot more air.

Off topic...Chinaclipper...are you ex Pan Am now untied, I'm sorry I mean United?
