How do I remove my power steering filter?

83 240D

The threaded rod in the reservoir has a pressed on clip retaining the spring and NOT a nut as seen in this picture

How do I get the filter out without destroying that clip?

I did this job a year ago and I recall my 83 300sd has a similar arrangement with a clip that rests in a small channel cut into the rod in your picture.

I eased the clip off carefully with a pair of needlenose pliers and then used a long pair of tweezers to haul the filter out. I was able to re-use the clip.

If you are nervous you might want to see if your local MB dealer has or can order the clip for you. Then you have an insurance policy if the clip breaks or leaps across the garage, never to be found again (of course, perhaps those oopsies only happen to me....).

Smoething like this (on far right)? If so you can get replacements at most auto parts or hardware stores>

Used pliers...

I had a clip, not a nut. Was concerned at first that I wouldn't be able to remove without damaging the clip. I used a pair of pliers to ease it off. Can't remember what I used to remove the old filter, but it came out without problem. Reused the old clip to compress the spring that holds down the filter. Seems to work just fine.

PS I used my MityVac to remove all of the old oil, and really scrubbed the inside of the oil chamber with a rag to remove all of the accumulated crud.
