Switch to synth in a 225K mile 606.910?

Suppose the simple answer is yes. Doenst move any oil, no leaks at all. Only trouble is finding diesel synth around here. But wonder if it best to continue to use dino as the engine has never seen synth. Quick starting too.

Mobil 1

I switched to Mobil 1 after 181K miles (now have 233K). My crankseal leak continues to improve (seep less and less and less) and the top end looks sooooo much better. Every time I take the valve cover off to do a valve adjustment and look at the valve train and I'm all smiles.

Wow, I ran synthetic in another car with some minor leaks, and man that synth sure finds them! Still use in in my soemwhat leaky Tahoe ( winter truck). Those cars weren't self-healing like the MBz is though! Off to Wally World, but not many diesel drivers up here yet. I swear I didnt see it there.

THNX folks!

EDIT: geez $48 for two jugs!! I'm taking this change to 7000 miles.

I am a big Mobil 1 synthetic fan, I use all of it! motor oil, ATF, grease. Mobil 1 has two diesel synthetic oils; Mobil 1 synthetic turbo diesel truck and synthetic heavy duty diesel 5-40w. Wal Mart has these? I know Auotzone does at $6.72/qt, which oil is better?

Theres no reason not to. If it starts leaking, fix the leaks. Synthetic oil is better for the engine and has a much greater oil change interval than mineral.

Use synthetic. If it leaks, that means it was already leaking but oil sludge plugged the hole and synthetic cleaned it out.

The benefits far outweigh the risks with switching to synthetic oil.

Im too cheap

to use the synthetic during the summer. I figgure that for 4 months I can deal with dino oil and then when I need a lighter and easier starting oil in the winter I will just switch when temps get cold .

$44.00 for 9 qts Mobil TD 5w-40 vs. $22.00 for 2 gallons Shell Rotella 15w-40.
Hmmm. lets see now....I didnt experience any benefits spending 2x as much for synth in the summer. The winter is a totally different story.

I put the 22 bucks I saved into the Sirius Radio and new speakers!

You should pick a brand and type of oil and stick with it. Changing types and brands frequently may cause conflict with the additive packages of the two oils and reduce it's effectiveness.

most walmarts don't carry the M1 5W40TD&T oil. the bigger stores do usually. I have 4 walmarts near me, only the big one has it in stock. and of all the M1 oils they carry, only the TD&T oil is in the 4 quart jug. all the others are in 5 quart jugs...
if you just want to try some synthetic, Rotella in the blue jug is a group 3 synthetic (means it's not 100% synthetic) and it's only around 16.00 per gallon.
advance auto just dumped all their TD&T oil for 4.00/quart... I got 12 quarts of it. no idea if they will be stocking it or not.

vstech, just checked my local Advance they have the 5w40 Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck synthetic for $5.24/qt, Autozone has it for $6.19/qt. What is up? Is Mobil getting ready to reformulate? Maybe a 15w40 synthetic like Amsoil? Is there a Mobil 1 Delvac 15w40 synthetic?

Synthetic oil with the extended oil changes is cheaper than dino. I used Mobil 1 synthetic in my '98, changed every 7,500 miles and it was cheaper than dino in my '85 every 3k.

7500? Mate, you should be doing at least 10,000 on synthetic.
