Flex pipe
I think I may need to replace the flex pipe on my 300SD. I get an occasional whiff of diesel, and I see a small black band on the flex pipe. However, when I go to Fastlane's site, I cannot find the flex pipe. What is it really called? What do they cost?

Call Phil or Roy on fastlane and they can probably get it. If not, see your MB dealer, they'll be able to get it.

Or take a stroll thru your friendly neighborhood boneyard and see what you can see.

I believe it's called a "header pipe".

I think it's called a "down pipe"
and shouldn't be hard to find...sure fastlane has it.

replaced mine with a section of flex pipe from the Napa Auto Parts. it was not the best fix but i was up in an area where there was no other way to replace it and i had a welder to weld in the new section... i figured it would fail because it isn't very flexable, and i hard mounted my exhaust with bolts because i got tired of the ruber doughnuts failing... and you know what... its been 2 yeas and the exhaust is still together! go figure the $4 napa fix worked!
if you have a welder its worth the $4!

I must have been cursed by this thread, the very next day (yesterday!) I was driving along with the windows down, all the sudden I hear "BurbleBurbleBurble" from the exhaust....so I think "what the heck?" and at the next light I accelerate and it sounded like a freightliner!!! Significant hole/leak in my header pipe, the whole thing is pretty rusted, so I just ordered a new one....but I love the sound so much I am not sure if I want to even replace it! I might remove the rest of the muffler system and go 3" pipe to the back...sides...or whatever. I love the sound!!! We'll see once my pipe comes and I figure out how I want to do it. I may just have the shop go from the end of the header pipe to the back of the car. I love the noise though.

All that noise is very tiring, especially on a trip of any significant distance. I just had a hole in the muffler and was surprised how nice and quiet it is, after the repair. Personally, I don't much care for the tractor sound going down the highway in, what should be, a comfortable sedan.

Its actually not that bad inside the car, I noticed no real difference on the freeway yesterday for 75 miles....and its QUITE loud outside the car... I am guessing that most of the sound will be behind the car if I use a 3" pipe to the back....I've noticed better performance with the low exhaust back pressure.

Broken Header pipe
New exhaust (this was from last fall when I put it in the 84D). Got some high temp silver paint and sprayed new exhaust system. Looks nice and shiny. Installed looking towards rear showing center and rear mufflers. Showing center muffler.

Personally I am still considering a 3" straight pipe to the back....
I am guessing my header pipe is broken like that....I don't have the replacement yet, so I can't take it off to see, and have had to keep driving it...I'll probably work on it Saturday or something. Sounds pretty cool though.

The noise doesn't bother me one bit, even on several hour long drives.. I actually miss the louder sound I got from letting it out at the downpipe, instead of the straight pipes I have now.

Sometimes they are really stuck and it takes massive amounts of penetrant and force...which ones aren't cooperating? Its probably harder on a 300D too, less room in there.
