I wouldn't panic yet. What you describe is not typical of the rod bending, which seems to have massive oil consumption as its only symptom until the very end. Leaks are probably something else. As has been mentioned clean the undercarriage well enough to identify the source of the leak. If your turbo seals let go you might see oil on the tailpipe, but we really won't know until you isolate the source.

Have you checked the turbo seals? That oil would probably burn though, but it's worth a look...

How much oil is it using? Try to find all possible sources for the leak before condemning the engine...almost any oil leak problem can be fixed for less money than a replacement engine

It was not using any oil up until this last week. I went 1900 miles on an oil change without having to add to it until this happened. I added a quart and brought it back up to full.

Just talked to my mechanic and he told me to chill out, I am taking it to him on Friday so we can put it up on the rack and check things out. I am glad I have him to fall back on. I tell ya, I am so paranoid with this 3.5 that I may just have to sell it so I can sleep at night! I will let you all know what we find. Thanks for all the input!!

My turbo drain was leaking pretty badly on the wagon, and it was causing oil droplets to really mess up the back tailgate and rear window.

you say that it is wet inside the tailpipe? thats not good this can mean disaster for your engine i suggest if you know that your engine is just pushing fuel out the exhaust. and washing the cylinder walls with diesel not oil and its pushing it into the crankcase. if you were smart you would not go anyfarther with this engine until you fixed what was causing this incomplete combustion weither it be the imfamous con rod bending or it be the head has cracked. either way you need to replace parts before something lets loose and really costs you some money.

Well here is what I know so far on this. We have isolated the oil leak to when he pulled the injection pump off he lost some oil which went into the catch pain and then leaked onto my driveway, so I have no oil leak. He is 90% sure that it is fuel on the back of the car. I bought this car about a month ago and someone has had the injection pump off and apart. My mechanic is trying to figure out why in the first place with 138000 on it they had it off. When he tried to time it right, the car would hardly run. He had to time it rich to get it run right. He is going to take it back off and the injectors out and take them to diesel shop to have all off the parts check and or repaired. He said they can fix just about any problem with IP as long as it is not the electronics in the pump. I thought these were manual pumps...but I trust him, he has been working on our families MB for 20 years! Thats about all I know right now. I will repost when they get back from the diesel shop.

Don't panic about rod bending. I am the original owner of a 1991 350SDL with 188K miles on it and it is doing fine, sweet car. My engine was built 12/90, I don't know if it has the beeffier rods in it or not. If it has made it to 133K I would think you don't have to worry about the rods. I think 350 rod failures usually happen with much less mileage than you have.

I am praying that it is not the rod bending..My mechanic is not thinking it either. Well I got the car back from my mechanic. We are still shaking our heads. They did not find anything wrong with the IP or injectors. They did make a couple of small tweaks to the pump. I cannot remember what the name of the part is but it has teeth the timing chain goes around it and it has something to do with the vacuum pump. The teeth were in bad shape and he said it looked like the vacuum pump at one time was not working. He replaced that and he put it all back together and it timed perfect. It is smoking still and depositing black spots on the car but he thinks it will clear up because the exhaust is loaded with diesel fuel. All I can do I guess is drive it and see what happens!

injection pumps are often blamed for problems and seldom cause them. especially by non experienced mb diesel mechanics.

FWIW, we had oil spots on the back of our van when i was a bit younger and it was the tranny leaking, it eventually gave out in SC (we were on our way back to PA). you might want to check the seals on the tranny. the pan might be leaking a bit, collecting dirt from the road and ending up on your rear end.

My mechanic has been working on MB Diesels for 25 years, that is all he works on. Well it is starting to clear up. I washed the back of the car off and after 3 days of driving, there is only some small droplets. It only smokes when I first start the car, once it warms up and idles, the smoke goes away. If I drive it hard it smokes for a few minutes and smells like burning fuel, but it clears up. I let it idle for 15 minutes and it was not smoking. He told me it may take while if the exhaust and mufflers were loaded with fuel.
