New Hydraulic Tensioner Leaks Oil--What did I do wrong? (85 300D)

I reset my Injection Pump ( boy it was off, I am glad I pulled it!), put in a new chain, replaced my hydraulic tensioner and rest my valves--wow, they were off too! My car sounded like a Swiss Watch. Luckily I didnt drive it rightaway! I noticed a huge puddle of oil underneath my Car! Three Quarts and growing! ( Any damage? I noticed her immediately! ) I shut her down.

Later I traced the leak to the underneath of my hydraulic tensioner on the left side of it. The nuts were tight and so was the Big 19mm nut. The oil was coming from the joint bewteen the engine block and mounting plate..

What did I do wrong!! Thank the L____ I didn't just drive it away!!!

Comes with a new gasket!

It comes with a new gasket. Though i wouldn't put that past myself. I listened to your advice on cleaning the area first too!

I used black RTV on everything when I resealed my SD about a month back. Works great.

Hyd. tensioner

Good thing you saw the hemorage...Hope you get that leak fixed...I use that Hylomar dressing...the blue stuff that is called gasket & flange dressing....easy to remove and does not turn into little rubber balls to stop up oil passages...it has stopped every leak I have so far....

Just curious...How far off was your IP timing and valve clearances...?

I think it was off like...maybe 24 degrees

It was funny I think someone messed up the pump tiiming by inserting it at TDC vice 24 degrees before Delivery. The engine was at TDC when I pulled the pump and when I did I noticed the marks on the IP shaft and pump body matching...which should happen at Start of Delivery 24 BTDC.
Also I wasnt gettiing any flow trickle cutoff when I tried to rotate the pump previousl whiledoing the SOD Test.

So I pulled the Pump..what a major--- got to pull the Oil Filter Housing.
. The engine used to be so Loud and shaky it wasn't funny. It was getting--get this--20 MPG or less! Now it sounds great. Its SO quiet______________

On the other hand what I meant abou the Hydraulic Tensioner is there isn't a chance mine is defective or has a plugged port ? I hope its just the gasket, I will be outside first thing AM

Timing..

You are saying that the pump was installed while the crank and cam were at TDC...?...and it would run like that...?...amazing....that would put the injection past late....I bet you do see major improvement....this will now drive like you have a new engine.. Let us know about that leak...I am about to put new tensioner and rails on my 300D....I hope you do not have anything odd like a casting flaw on the new tensioner housing....hope its just the gasket....you wont sleep tonight wondering.....
