Turbo Upgrade?

I was wondering... Are there any possible turbo upgrades for our cars? The guy at the local mercedes shop told me that there weren't but I imagine that there must be a way to at least install an intercooler instead of the turbo directly into the manifold. If anyone has any info, Please let me know. Also... what Kinda boost car u feed one of these diesel engines, I know the compression is 21.5 to 1 so Im wondering. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks guys,
Annoying newbie

Someone should make a sticky out of this question.

The rule of thumb to wring more performance from these cars is to get more fuel. The factory turbo can produce more boost than the IP can support with external adjustments. Once you figure out how to get more fuel, then look into a bigger turbo. Do a search on the Finns.

He was right. There are NO aftermarket turbos that are 100% bolt-on. Only the stock Garrett T3 and KKK K26 turbos that came on these cars are a direct fit.

Also, there is no easy intercooler made for them. Everything is pretty cramped and installing an efficient one is a very difficult task.

The stock setting of 13psi is plenty for stock settings and about 22psi is about the max the turbo is good for. More boost alone will NOT make more power.

The waste gate on my turbo opens between 10 and 11 psi (assuming that my boost gauge is accurate, of course -- it's a brand-new VDO 0-15 psi unit, attached to a spare hole in the intake manifold). Is there any way of adjusting the waste gate to open at the "stock setting of 13 psi?" I can't seen anything on the waste gate that looks adjustable.

I heard the ones from an 85 are slightly larger than the previous ones, Garrett or KKK. I think those are the same ones with a vacuum device attached to them?

But won't a larger turbo cause longer turbo lag?

They are identical except for the ARV valve on the compressor housing.

Boost adjustment for the Garrett.

How did you check when the wastegate opens? Is 11 psi the max you see on the gauge or did you apply a pressure source to the wastegate line? If you're reading the gauge, use a MityVac or some such device with a boost gauge tee'd in and see at what pressure the actuator starts to push the wastegate open and at what pressure it's all the way open.

That's good information but I'm not sure what to do with it As long as you confirm the wastegate is fully closed when there's no pressure signal to the actuator, you should be good. Then fit a ball-and-spring type manual boost controller between the compressor fitting and the wastegate actuator. Set it so you get 13psi at WOT in second or third geat at 4000 rpm. No need to adjust the wastegate.

If you want to adjust the wastegate, in most cases the rod between the actuator and the wastegate bellcrank can be adjusted for length. I think shortening the rod tightens the spring inside the actuator requiring more boost to move the rod.

i remember reading about 350SDL or 350SD turbos giving more power to W124 300D's and SDL's if they were to be swapped?

Is this true?

They won't get any more power unless the max fuel is increased. But yes, the turbos on the 350's have a slightly larger compressor wheel and will give abit more airflow.
