glow plugs not cycling
I've been bad! I parked my 83 300D-TD for 15 months with the battery disconnected.
I connected the battery and jump started her and she fired right up and ran great. Drove around for a few hours to charge the battery. Shut her down and the battery didn't take any charge. Bought a new battery and she fired right up drove her home( my pals home actually I don't live here any more), shut her down. I tried to restart her a few minutes ago and no go! I noticed the glow plug light isn't cycling and usual. I recently prior to parking her put all new glow plugs in. What are my couple of steps for trouble shooting the glow plugs? The engine was still warm when I tried to restart. Isn't there a temp sensor which controls the glow plugs? I guess I'll wait over night and how the system responds to a cold engine in the morning. Any other thoughts. I'm away from my tools and haven't touched this car for a long time. thanks in advance. I did do search but couldn't dial in enough specifics for this problem.

Do U have the parallal GP with a GP relay? Does the GP relay click when U turn the key switch to the run position? If it clicks and the GP do not work (U can tell if the GP are working by watching the cabin light, it will dim if the GP are working), check the fuse inside the GP relay. Let us know the results. The GP light in the dash is just a time indicator, I.E. how long to wait before turning key to start position. Its also a open GP indicator when it blinks after the engine starts. If the GP light doesn't work it doesn't necessarily mean the GP are not working. The engine temp sensor controls how long the dash mounted GP light stays on. It has no control over the GP themselves. I think I have a parallel GP with a relay. It's dark out now. I don't think I could hear the relay clicking.
Is the GP controller relay located on the drivers side of the engine bay? Is the fuse there too? I initially checked the main fuse block and didn't see any fuel system related fuses. I'll wait till morning. Thanks Alex

Yes GP relay is inside of LF fender under the hood. If U have some one else turn the key U should be able to feel the GP relay engage. If the GP relay doesn't engage, U might have a problem with the relay. You can jump from the + battery to the fuse screw in the relay to get the engine started. THe fuse is a strip fuse between 2 screws and rated for ~80 amps. But the relay will still click if the fuse is open. Some times the fuses gets an invisable crack in it and doesn't work even though it looks good.. Take a voltage reading on both sides of the fuse if U can get the relay to click. Went out and looked at it this morning and indeed that fuse strip is visibly cracked. A new one and I'll be back in biz.

Glad I could help. Get an extra fuse or 2 and carry it/them as spare parts. U never know when this fuse cracks or burns out. And they are inexpensive. P E H |
