General Front Rotor Question
 

I have an 84-300D that is new to me by about 2 months. In replacing the rear brake pads, I noticed that the rear rotors had a significant lip on the edge.

I checked my front rotors and they have the same lip on the outer edge. The front pads are fine. Is that normal for MB rotors? I usually work on my Volvos and have never seen this. I would think they needed rotors if they were on my Volvos.

Replace them. Worn out.

there is a thickness spec on rotors.

i would measure them before changing them. some lip is not a problem.

Yea, there's a certain thickness spec, but if there's a real lip and you don't have a measuring caliper, and it bothers you,
change them - they're cheap.

Brakes are maybe the cheapest and yet most important safety feature on the car.
And it makes you feel good! :D

Thanks for the info. I will probably do the whole shabang in late June (rotors, calipers, pads and hoses).

The lip doesn't mean much, takes a few thousand miles to form. You need to measure the rotors thickness. Usualy you get two sets of pads out of a set of front rotors. Rear rotors and pads seem to last 100k-150k miles. Well unless you have traction control and give it a good work out, then much much less.:D

If you have no records of when they were last done, just replace them and get a base line. Rotors are cheap.

I was pleasently surprised at the low cost of rotors and pads for the front of the SDL. Its a fairly easy job to DIY as well. It makes it easy to change out the rotors and the pads, especially the SDL, it eats front pads and rotors. Just get a good set of brass drifts to get the bearings out and you can change those out while you're at it. All in all it really doesnt' take long and it's pretty easy to do.

I found the MB rear were the same as Volvo 240 ( 80s)

Same on w116, 123.

yeah, i didnt know they were exactly the same but the pads for the rear are the same on benz volvo and saab. i know from experience, having owned all of them. probably others as well.

Just remember to use brake parts cleaner and a rag to get that protective coating off of the rotors.
