Running Strait Kerosene

Is it okay to run Kerosene even in the summer, or will it blow up my engine?

TheDon 04-27-2006 02:36 PM

it doesnt lubricate the IP as well as D2 does

Do you have a supply that you're just trying to use up? If so then you should slowly mix it in with regular diesel rather than burn it straight. If it were my vehicle I'd also add in at least a liter of vegetable oil or a dose of Power Service to make sure the fuel has enough lubricity.

If you are just thinking of buying kerosene instead of diesel, there's no reason to do that because from what I've seen kerosene costs as much or more, but it doesn't have as much energy as diesel.

Kerosene doen't have to meet any lubricity standards.

Mix in 5% biodiesel and you will be fine.

Mix in 60 to 80% wvo.

There is a farm supply store near my house with a kerosene pump... I don't know what the cost per gallon is, the thought of using it as a fuel just popped in my mind so I was curious about it...

Also, isn't the MB IP Pump lubricated by its own oil resevoir?

You must have lubrication in your fuel to lubricate the pump components that contact the fuel, those parts are not in contact with the engine oil.

Kerosene is typically equal or about 10% more than diesel in cost, it is around here anyways, its about $3.29 a gallon  Plus, less energy, less mpg's, no lubricity....I'd stay with diesel.

someone can feel free to correct me if i am wrong but im pretty sure the price of kerosen does not have the "road fuel tax" added into it, so if you
have any enemies around town they could report you.
i dont know what state or fedal agency polices this kind of thing but i know this is the reason you cant put home heating oil into your diesel with out looking over your sholder (as you also pour in a little red dye to fool state troopers hehehehehe)

How flamable is Kero when not under pressure?
I want to know if it is in the gasoline or diesel catagory for storage.

Defenitely more like Diesel. It will need a catalyst to burn or enough heat.

Flash point will be between diesel and gasoline. About 125F versus 165F for diesel. The cetane is a lot lower than diesel. Cetane of kerosene is around 40. The minimum for #2 diesel is 45. Not sure what effect that would have in an old mercedes diesel.

Right on. Places that sell dyed diesel and kerosene are NOT supposed to sell them to people without a license. If tax is not paid, using it is against the law, and the place selling it to people without a valid license can have their licence pulled and a big fine:eek:
Of course, I heard there are people in the NE using home heating oil as diesel fuel. So, if you are not stopped, and nobody squeal you are fine. I look at them in the same group as those that are using WVO or SVO with no road tax paid.

just as a point of reference.

i have used kero in my suburban diesel to get on down the road when i ran low and no diesel was found. it ran a bit smoother and i couldnt detect less power.
