rebuilding a starter motor
I have a used starter motor that free spins at 9200 rpm (a good sign) but it is making an abnormal noise. Anyone ever take one apart and replace bearings/ brushes and grease it up? Links? pics? Source of parts?
I called a place that rebuilds starters and asked if they load test it after a rebuild. The answer was "no, there is no such thing since there are so many starters out there."

I did one about 10 years ago.
The most important thing is to clean it well. The brushes are replaceable. There is a wire retaining ring under a collar that stops the gear/over run clutch from going too far, it is a PITA to get off. The over run clutch can start to slip. I have pulled one to pieces & roughened the surfaces with emery. Dot use molly based grease on it as it will slip. The bearings are bronze bushes. The plate that the brushes are mounted on is a weakness, make sure it is clean & able to make good electrical contact with the alloy end cover or you will have trouble. The field & rotor windings insulation eventually breaks down & then there is little you can do for it. Hope that helps

It did engage since I was able to measure 9200 rpm.

You'll need the Bosch number off the starter
to order parts.

I brought the starter to a local rebuilder and he hooked power to it and spun it and said it sounded fine. I asked what they do to test after the rebuild and he said what he just did, by the sound of it free spinning. He said with 30 years experience he can do that. I also asked him if I should replace the brushes and grease the bearings and he said no, just run it.
I still would like to look at how long the brushes are and replace them if worn. Anyone have a procedure (with pics, ideally)? Compress ignite. Thanks for the bushing p/n's. I won't need it this time but it's good future reference when I do. Last edited by funola; 10-22-2010 at 04:18 PM. |
