Strange brake behavior

While driving the '85 this evening I noticed my brake warning light had come on, then when I applied the brakes they felt softer than usual but still worked. As I continued to drive (using the transmission to slow down) the light began to dim, then went out and the brakes seemed to return to normal as well. I got home and checked the fluid, but it is full to the max mark (although a bit dirty, I need to flush the system). Anybody have any idea what is going on?

When that happened on my 240D manual, the rear chamber on my master cylinder was low and I had a leak from my clutch master cylinder. Are you sure the fluid level is full?

Yes. Both chambers are full. I did notice that the front "float" seemed to be too low and sticky. Could it have been blocking the front of the MC?

A soft pedal that goes away could mean you were boiling the brake fluid in the calipers if you were using the brakes frequently.

I'd check the brake pads. The sensors are kicking in.

This brake fluid is fairly old, if it has absorbed water would it boil much more easily? I was using the brakes some, but not excessively, not like I was going down a mountain or anything.

yes. water boils at 100C, brake fluid boils at around 280C do a nice pressure flush, or at least a good long gravity bleed job.

Yeah, red=low fluid, yellow (orange)=low pad wear.

Yellow light. Untill today I thought it was the warning light for both pads and fluid.

So what kind of pads do you guys like? The rotors look OK, no deep ridges. Should I replace, reface or leave them alone?

Textar pads, if rotor is in specs, don't replace or reface. Waste of $. DIY, fronts will need extra attention, repack bearings while you're there.

PBR Deluxe. My hands down favorite. Work great and has low dust.

Always better to have your disk resurfaced or replaced but with the condition you stated and as long they are not pulsating, then you should be OK just replacing the pads.
