oil filter change - FYI

I've got the engine mounts off and the engine jacked up in the engine bay....I changed the oil filter for the first time (I'm new to MB's) and was having a hard time getting the lid past a heater hose at the firewall.....after I finished with the filter swap...I was thinking Huh, that was unusually difficult for what should be easy..... Then I realized it would probably be alot easier if the engine weren't jacked up - DOH!!!

don't forget to change the O-ring at the bottom of the tube attached to the filter housing cap. Yes, it really is/was made of rubber and not granite.

Where that hose runs, it's aggravating even without the engine jacked up. I have on occasion even disconnected that hose just to make it easier, but usually you can just hold it out of your way (along with some vacuum lines) and lift the lid off with your other hand being careful.

I ended up removing the plastic part of the front firewall (in front of the heater box) because the center bolt on the canister cover is well and truely seized on the 300D (W124 chassis). It's there so you can remove it, then pull the cover due to restricted space, and someone in the past didn't use anitsieze on it.

I suppose I could try to break it loose, but it doesn't leak (or this is the cover off an SDL instead!) and I'm pretty sure I'd damage the cover. The firewall part just snaps out, so that's what I do.

First time I did LOF on "Diesela" (300D Turbo) I inadvertently disconnected the vacuum line to the IP shutoff... Short panic period on first startup/shutdown before realization dawned. Live and learn.
