Optima 34R Direct Replacement?

I went to leave for college today for an exam and what a lovely surprise that my Duralast battery has let me down yet again. In the last year these batteries have failed about 4 times, stranding me at least once (last winter at 0*F was my favorite). It was doing very well until having to drive home every night with lights on. At idle my voltage starts discharging the battery but at any other time it is pretty decent. I upgraded my alternator to a adjustable regulator, set to 14V. Anyway I think I'll try to talk autozone into taking my $65 Duralast battery towards credit for a new Optima Red Top. The 34R battery is 5" shorter but 5/8" taller, same width. Being it is the reversed model the terminals are correct for the MB setup, only loss will be 50CCA but it is supposed to let out more voltage during the first 10 seconds of starting which may offset this. Anyway, has anyone tried this setup before? Here is a link to the product info on optima's red top lineup.

Thumbs up

Optima batteries are excellent, I have one in my '01 Z71 truck. It's been in there for quite some time now and shows no signs of problems what-so-ever. I plan to put one in my Benzo (as soon as I decide which one I'm going to purchase! lol)

Don't worry about the CCA rating and go for the Optima. It'll spin that engine like a toy. I've got one that is at least 5 years old. Has seen service in a Jeep CJ-7, my boat, and now the Jetta. Still going strong.

Cool, so all I need to know now is whether it'll work without getting reverse terminals or not. What I'm thinking is this battery is supposed to last ~15yrs from what I hear, while I'm pretty sure I'll keep the benz I think my next daily driver will be a CTD (Dodge, Cummins Turbo Diesel) which also can use the same group 34 battery but the poles are in normal. My ground cable is already longer than normal so I'm thinking this will work?!

I have a pair of Optima Bateries in my GMC truck to start it and believe me they are way better than even a new pair of interstate batteries. Truck starts below 20 degrees even without the block heater (which is shorted and doesn't work)
