Someone who didn't know what they were doing has been in there.....

With no heat sheilds, you will get overheated nozzles AND low compression, and it appears to me that at least two of those injectors have nozzles stuck open.

They need to be cleaned and have pop pressure set, at the very least. I would guess, myself, that they are shooting a solid stream of fuel instead of a nice mist and that injection timing is way late at the actual nozzle from the pintle being stuck up (no residual pressure).

New nozzles are probably in order -- all that carbon will wear them pretty badly. Test to see, of course.

Clean the prechamber well before installing new heat sheilds and re-installing the injectors so they don't leak, and be prepared for quite a bit of blowpy until the carbon burns out of the combustion chambers.

It will run MUCH better with new nozzles.....

Peter

That answers my question. What would be the effect of not having the heat shields intalled.

Another question: Is is advisable to install new heats shields when installing injectors from one head to another?

It's my understanding that the heat shields are like crush washers, so once an injector is torqued down on it, the shield can no longer be used. It would be like re using a crush washer on your oil drain plug (if you use the plug).
Thanks
David

Always use new heat shields whenever injectors are being installed, even if you had just put them in. Once an injector is removed, it's heat shield is no longer effective. The shields are cheap, too. I usually keep spares on hand.

They looked like they might be crush washers...

I haven't torqued down the injectors yet, so I'll order some along with some more of those o-rings for the oil filter stem, oh, and some injector line...

Update

Yesterday, I completed the order with Phil, got everything I needed.

COULD be here tomorrow, not that I could do anything with it then, we are supposed to get rain, then freezing rain, sleet, then 4-6 inches of snow ,then, we are supposed to have school, I think I wont be going, even though I live a 2 second walk from my high school.

ASAP- I will buy a money order to buy a newly rebuilt set of injectors, I am getting a deal... or I would have rebuilt.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

I hope this problem turns out to be a bad set of injectors
That car deserves to run
I've been watching this thread for months now, and it's given me inspiration and pride in the wonderfully helpful people who post here.

Just wanted to let you know that I'm keeping my (chilled...brrr) fingers crossed here in eastern Pennsylvania in expectation of your SD firing up and finally being driveable !

I just plugged mine in an hour ago...I like having heat first thing in the morning...20 deg F here tonight...was -1 deg F a couple mornings ago BRRRR...anyway, I wanted to wish all of you people happy holidays, and thanks

Merry Christmas Eve everyone!

Well, the parts from Phil have not arrived yet, and for some reason, I am not able to track them, should I try to call him ASAP?

Anyway, if I did have the parts today, I wouldnt want to work on my car anyway, and that is not because it is christmas eve, its that Sady is sitting in over a foot of the white stuff!

Take a look for yourself!

you wussies ... there are places where that is shirtsleeve weather (with a generous dollop of single malt, a sweater and a cap )

We had -8 yesterday, -28 with wind chill (whatever the hell that means), and ALL the diesels cranked over, 2 of them without block heaters( they took 20 secs though)

even the tractor cranked over - 1946 Ford 8N w/ flathead 4, I had to prime it with starter fluid though ..

6 Degrees this morning and my battery decided to call it quits after about a 25 second glow....then about 9-10 seconds of rather slow cranking.....about to go put in the new DieHard International I got today....I'll use the old battery as a "portable" power supply for my power inverter....once I get a charger for it.

Hate to say this, but...
It was about 65 here in San Jose today.
The diesel started just fine.
