123 Install Extreme Dynamat
I just finished the installation in my 83 300cd and will begin to document it here...Basically it includes an Alpine Head unit with XM built in and a CD. In order to be able to control all the speakers in the car I am using a Nakamichi EC200H crossover for the front and a Nak EC200 and EC200H for the rear which are mounted in the glovebox. These are "old school" units from the 80's but have 24 db slopes I believe and are very clean..The speakers in the car are two pair of Boston Acoustic 5.5 Pro. They are very clean and handle all the power I give them. Mounted in the trunk are 4 ADS PH15 "also old school" amplifiers which are all bridged for 12 X 110 watts RMS and drive every speaker in the vehicle with its own amplifier. I am using 2 12" JL Audio dual voice coil subs for the custom sub box in the trunk. Considering that the install took around 100 hours (with Dynamat) I am glad to be done...I spent a week of my vacation finishing it and other features include all custom made preamp cables (8 hours) and resoldering of both cruise control and heater controller and now both work. I will provide some pictures as soon as I figure out how to put them on this forum.

tips
Ramblin, thanks for the anecdote and pics. That looks way cool. Is that dynamat for acoustics or a sound deadener of external car/road noise?
Hey, I am interested to know HOW to resolder the cruise control computer of the w123. Can you statry a new thread with that info? The general info has been threaded before but what I still am not sure of is HOW to resolder the points. Do ya just touch a hot tip onto the soldered point until it gets moist or what? Do you use a reguler weller solder iron? THANKS

I've done my trunk floor and under the rear seats on my E300, but to do as much as you did in your w123, DAMN!
Awesome Job BTW!

Dynamat Usage
I used two bulk paks of Extreme Dynamat and a door kit which I didn't even show because I put the door panels on before I took pictures. You can get bulk paks for about $150 ea and look for a place that gives free shipment for over a certain amount..The stuff is heavy and I wouldn't want to pay for shipment. The car is very quiet now considering the car has 280,000 miles on it but I also installed all new shocks and tires. My brother remarked after driving it that the car seemed tight and he has a similar car (SD). Of course the major reason I did the dynamat was to increase the level of bass in the car...I drilled out the bottom of first aid kit and lined it with dynamat to keep vibrations down and the bass into the passenger cabin is quite substantial considering how much metal is between the trunk and the passenger cabin. Sure does deaden those bumps also...Will start a thread on resoldering of the cruise and heater controller in the future...By the way the Dynamat usage was 84 sq ft. I found one of the cheapest places for Dynamat is as follows. http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductList.aspx?CategoryID=27&ManufacturerID=648

Ramblin, I was wondering how you came up with the speaker placement. It looks like you have separate tweeters just in front of the front doors near the floor and on the rear deckwith midrange speakers in the doors and also on the rear deck.
Was this just where they would fit or was there another reason for this choice of placement?

Front speaker placement was to increase the front stage without having the tweeters being directional as happens when they are in the dash or in the doors.
Rear speaker placement is stock except the tweeters which are of course cut into the rear deck...The speakers are both Boston Acoustic 5.25 pro. Install was based on fairly current thinking in the car audio world...

Greetings. How did you get the bass into the passenger area of the car? The trunk looks pretty tight on my '85. Also, why the tweeters in the kick panel vs. the dash? Thanks. Jeff

When I got ready to run the speaker wires up into the dash on my SEC, I couldn't figure out the best way (meaning the easiest yet most suitable way) to do it. I was out of time and haven't had time to get back to it yet. Is there a simple way to run speaker wire up from the floor board on the driver's side into the dash and over to the console? I ask because I'm notoriously bad about making things much more difficult than they really need to be.
