It wouldn't hurt to have a magnet. But I wouldn't "drop it in the pan". If it came loose by friction or vibration, you never know where it would end up. It would actually be fine if you simply stuck a strong neodymium magnet on the outside of the pan. If it came loose, you'd lose it, but it would do no harm. And it would be just as effective.
