I posted the Ebay ad as this filter is similar to the Stanadyne one that some said they use. It cost the same but the shipping is free.

At my last Mechanics job I was a Gen Set Mechanic and I worked on the Gen Sets that power the Refer Units on Refrigerated Containers.
The primary filter they use is the same style with the same routine to take them apart and change the filter and clean them.
The Filter Housings were mounted high enough above the Fuel Tank so that Fuel did not gush out if you had to take one apart.
But oddly enough although I often drained crap out of the bottom of the bowl I seldom changed the Filter Element itself (most likely it was a 20 micron element) due to it being plugged in the 3 years I worked there.

You do not want to mount this filter below the level of the Fuel Tank unless you put in a valve! As you said it could get messy and it takes too long to change compared to a spin-on; while fuel is comming out.
