83 300SD - It had to be saved - Am I doing this right?

Ok guys 1st post !

I recently came to own a 83 300SD - it was REALLY cheap!

Previous PO was running unfiltered WVO and killed injection pump.

Local guy here bought it back from him and tried to get it running - never could get fuel through the pump - he cleaned out everything. He sold it to me because he had too many MB projects going on and didnt want to mess with this one. I got the car for 350 and he towed it to me. Car is in fair shape - needs paint and some TLC but otherwise PO said everything did work before IP got murdered. Seat motors are bad - its not the switch.

So thats the background of this vehicle. For the past two weeks I've searched and read every post I could find relative to this car and the work its needs to get running agian. Im a fair mechanic but I need a few of you to look over my shoulder so to speak and say thats good or thats bad. I hate paying someone to to do something I could have done myself.

What I've done so far:

1. Tried just about everything to get old IP to work. No go!!

2. Removed old IP - purchased another one from PO who works on MB's - actually I dont pay unless it works - he's a good guy!

3. Put on new IP - bleed, pump and cranked. It started twice and died. Really stinky exhaust ! Currently recharging battery with a crappy 6amp charger.

4. Bonehead move # 1 - I just removed old IP and installed new one "with splined shaft at roughly the same position as the first IP"

So my questions/concerns are:

1. Could bonehead move # 1 be why Im unable to get this baby running?
2. What is meant by having the IP installed "180 degrees off"

Thanks guys! I wanna post pics as soon as I find my extra battery and charger!
